How do artists respond to war through their work?

Over the centuries, the artistic response to war has run the gamut from the patriotic history plays of Shakespeare to the protest songs of the Vietnam War. It is through the arts - theater, dance, music - that we are best able to express the agony and triumph of battle, the bonds of the men and women who serve, and the strength and sacrifice of the families who stay behind.

Dramaturg Mark Bly, Washington Ballet Artistic Director Septime Webre and Howard University Associate Professor of Music Dr. Anthony Randolph joined Arena Stage after a performance of Mother Courage and Her Children for a look at artists' reactions to war over the years.
