This film was inspired by Akira: the classic anime and manga.

Shot 90% guerrilla. Equipment used includes canon xh-a1 along with the letus extreme for select shots, and the canon 5d mark 2. Software used: Adobe After Effects, Premiere and Photoshop.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out, no matter how minor the help was. This would have been impossible to make without any of you.

[ January 28, 2010 ] Now live on Youtube in HD: youtube.com/watch?v=2ngOSHGYbhQ

[ January 28, 2010 ] Seeda (the rapper of the opening song) hears of this video all the way in Japan and approves.

Rough translation of blog: "[title] Some dope unofficial shit my friend put me up on

This is really high quality, so I'll pretend I didn't see this (e.g. I'm not gonna sue him). Holla."...

Excluding the fact that there is absolutely no plot, its perfect tribute video. The night scenes driving around the city and the original music from the anime are soooo ... Akira... great job! Like it a lot.

Actually, there was a plot! In the beginning, Kaneda's Friend gets killed, then its Kaneda drinking a few shots to mourn and probably get ready to kill the clown who killed his friend. Its a revenge plot done in 5 minutes! Genius!

yeah, it's prolly easier if you understand the track that's playing in the background at the bar - the rapper is mourning about a friend who died. It actually fits in pretty brilliantly. Good work!

awesome stuff. is the focus stuff at :15 and :19 done in camera with the provided lenses? or is that a post thing? it looks really cool!
  • Eye Tape 2 years ago
its not stock lens but a canon FD 50mm f1.2 lens on a letus attached to the xh-a1...the fstop is low so the focus distance is very shallow

Very nice tribute! and you pulled off a nice look too to match. I'd be curious which shots you used the xh a1 for without the Letus. I'm guessing for the later night scenes perhaps? As mostly everything else has shallow depth of field, so must be between 5D and Letus on xh a1? and last question (!) how did you find mixing the HDV and HD footage from the 5D in post?
  • Eye Tape 1 year ago
The opening scene and the "walk out to the bike" scene were the letus

The bar scene, the bike mount shots in the tunnel, and the side shot where the two bikes charge at each other were the 5d.

For all other night shots I used the xh-a1 with a .8x wide angle adapter.

Matching the color treatment was a little tricky for the night scenes between the xh-a1 and the 5d. It seems like, at least for the night scenes, that the xh-a1 raw capture appears more washed out with a slightly smaller range of color. Thanks for the interest.

    Question: does Tetsuo actually die?
  • Eye Tape 1 year ago
haha, well that's how I saw it. he exploded if memory serves me right
