Oh yeah.. definitely better than the first one in my opinion. I liked the variety of shots.

The shot from the top of the tower is epic! Do they normally allow photography up there... with tripods and all?
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
yep. currently no problems with tripods
  • Tim Burton 1 year ago
How long did the shot from the tower with the moving shadows take?
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
just a couple of hours or so

Awesome as usual Phil!Just a curiosity:
on a timelapse when changes the color of the sky(i.e: between evenibg and night) should i touch the iris or should i leave it like i set in the light of the evening?

    thx
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
check out my previous blog for settings Steve. I mostly went with aperture priority. The light change is too drastic. For some shots I had it on manual so it obviously went much darker deliberately.

"The light change is too drastic. For some shots I had it on manual so it obviously went much darker deliberately."

I prefer this approach... which is why I think this video is brilliant. Great settings. Sorry for your friends loss.

Nice work,i just wondering how did you get zooming?canon 5d-7d have no digital zooming right? But whats is your solution?.
  • Oli Kember plus 2 years ago
The zoom motion is created in post in final cut - have a look here:
    brighthub.com/multimedia/video/articles/15672.aspx
  • ARC LIMITED plus 2 years ago
Thanks for answer, sounds good solution, but i think the footage will lose resolution.
  • Austin Upchurch plus 2 years ago
Footage will not lose resolution because the timelapse is shot as images from the cam not video. The RAW image resolution is much larger than HD video therefore you have a lot of room to "zoom" in post.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
exactly. the original file from the 5dmkii is 5k resolution, so huge amount to play with
  • ARC LIMITED plus 2 years ago
Do you know, adobe have digital zoom functionality? i mean how can i capture 25 frames in 1 second, are there alternatives software etc?

Beautiful, man. That was so relaxing to watch. I thought the shadows sweeping across the city from your perch high above was very cool, and the people in the pool really did look like insects.

Love the music as well. There are a couple of pieces on that soundtrack that always give me the chills.

how did you find the time to do all this stuff phil? wow. great piece. loved the cloud/star bookends at the head and tail.

makes sense running multiple cameras when timelapsing. you may throw out a third, but you get a lot of good footage with this method.

it was very hard for me to distinguish between the 7d/5dmk2 and lumix sutff here. so sharp, colors popped.

always a pleasure to race to a computer to view your stuff when you send out the twitter message!

Yeah this is great Phil. Certainly one of your better if not your best time lapse pieces and the music played a big part in that. Music choice is something that is pretty understated in video web content and you always nail it. Good stuff. Now for me to go off and show people this.

The soul of a piece really comes from the music, and you seem to consistently choose music that evokes great emotions, congrats.

Funny to think that half the impact of this comes from many many hours standing outdoors waiting for these shots to come together, then cutting them together and grading etc etc, and the other half is simply from a score that was already pre-existing.. But each half is just as important to the impact. It just shows how much music makes a difference to the final piece.
  • Philip Bloom pro 2 years ago
    thanks oli. totally agree
  • rene coronado 1 year ago
Oli, please don't forget that the creation of the music also took many hours and days and required the same high level of technical skill and aesthetic taste to pull off. Just because that part of the process had already been undertaken does not diminish what that process was.

Also, now that these timelapses have been shot and stored away they too can be picked up and used to great impact in Philip's future work - much in the same way that the music was in this instance.

Question about settings - I see the video is in 1280, was this choice by design?

Wow, great work Phillip! I dont know how you found time for this while doing all of the "regular" work over there. Fantastic and a brilliant choice of music from a very underrated movie.

    Dear Philip,

When I watched your Skywalker Ranch video, I thought, wow, it's so sharp, like digital, yet warm, like 35 millimeter film.

Now, one of the things I dislike about digital video is how cold and austere it can be. So I was pleased to read this from your Web site AFTER I watched the Skywalker film:

Over the past 3 years I have embraced the 35mm film adaptor market, shooting on HD video but making it look close to 35mm film.

Please don't lose sight of that thinking, Philip. It's what makes your work so special!

    Thanks.
