I thought detergents were bad for the stretch in wetsuits or something like that?

everything is "bad" for your wetsuit (sun, salt water, putting it on or taking it off all eventually make your wetsuit breakdown. mild detergents like woolite are fine in small amounts and keep your suit from turning into a cesspool while its alive.

A couple of points about microbiology.
    1. Wetsuit stink mostly comes from living bacteria and fungi. Killing them is the first step.

    2. Listerine is mostly alcohol (ethanol). The antibacterial value of alcohols is maximal at 70%, and alcohols evaporate even at room temperature. Adding boiling water will blow away most of the listerine (smell the vapors and see for yourself. If you must, get some mouthwash with tartar control (look for the ingredient triclosan). I wouldn't waste money on this.

    3. Woolite is actually a pretty strong detergent, so if you must use it, a dab will do.

I keep away the funk differently, more on the flip.

I wash my suit out after every session, using hypoallergenic unscented laundry detergent at about 1/3 strength. Use cold, clean water (about 5 gallons), and 5 minutes of grape stomping action (I have a wide bucket).LEAVE the RESIDUAL DETERGENT IN THE SUIT! When it hangs to dry, most will drip out, and the remainder is neither noticeable nor bad for the suit (it's unscented and mild).

Fungi are stinky, and neither mild soap nor alcohols will kill then. For this you need the big gunsFor serious funk, do a 30-60 minute soak in Head and Shoulders or similar anti-dandruff shampoo (I use store brand). This HAS perfume, so repeat the steps above to get rid of the residue. Use about 1 cup of shampoo per 5 gallons.

Booties: increase the amount of shampoo and soak time. Still rinse it out with clean water before wearing them.
