At the start of the 2013-14 academic year, a group of incoming students gathered at Evergreen in advance of Orientation Week for the first ever Student Civic Engagement Institute. The Institute, commonly known as ESCEI, gave the students a head start on becoming leaders at Evergreen through activities, discussions, volunteer opportunities and presentations by Evergreen faculty and President Les Purce. They connected with each other and found ways to connect with the broader community while at the same time developing interpersonal skills to help them address differences respectfully and constructively.
