The goal of this course is to examine the struggle for gender equality ("the paramount moral challenge of our era") country by country in the developing world, using Sheryl WuDunn's and Nicholas D. Kristof's Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Shifting from global to local, students look into and interact with organizations (of their choice) that support women in Japan. In keeping with WuDunn-Kristof's methodology, emphasis is placed on narrative, analysis and policy prescriptions.
A secondary goal of the course is to familiarize students with the tools, sources, methods and uses of logic required for doing research, and to provide practice in presenting those results both orally and in writing.
