This is a short film about my job as a Projectionist. I am quite proud of this film, mostly because I’m so proud of my job – it seems like a fullfilment of my childhood romantic notions of what I wanted to be when I grew up. Nonetheless what it most discernibly omits is how truly magnificent all the other staff are who work there too. It is dedicated to the other projectionists I know; some of whom are under threat of redundancy, and unquestionably to Sammy; for the lessons and facts about Projection.

In a few years when all these people in suits that run cinemas realise that showing a wide range of films (that I'm sure the public will be asking for) requires more skill than just switching on a digital projector, I think your job is suddenly going to become very specialist, well paid and in high demand! YEAH!

I love this cinema! And thanks to this video I love it even more. And trust me, those prices are cheapo compared to the ones I frequent.

Next time I see a film there I'll look up at the projection box and think of this.

Also: The Emperor from Star Wars? Really??

  • Fantastic short! As I watched it I was struck by powerful nostalgia. I had to quit my job as a projectionist to concentrate on Film Production in University. Glad to know I was not the only to spend my time like you do. I miss those century projectors...Keep the good job.

I loved this. Such a sweet little labor of love, a tribute to his work. A big fan of movies, I miss the sound of the projector, the flickering light, and people yelling "focus" to get the projectionists attention. What happens to all those odds and ends of film clips? Shades of Cinema Paradiso. I wept through the final five minutes of that one. Thanks for sharing this!

Awesome. I used to do this while getting into cinematography. Your short is really a great homage piece to the job. fantastic film.
  •
  • It's a fantastic film! Sure, everyone else has said so as well but it's the truth. I, myself, work at our local movie theater but I work the box office. Alas, we have DLP, which you know as digital projectors. It's sad because we rarely have 35mm anymore, our projectionist doesn't really have much to do but flip a few switches. He would love this film, though. I think I'll show it to him. Congrads, man. It's a beautiful piece of work.

From a past fellow projectionist - great film. The life and rituals of the projectionist appear to be universal :) This is just a great, nostalgic elegy to this dying pocket of show business. Well done.
  •
  • Jake Robinson 1 year ago
You should start collecting the projectors... you know alot about them and it is obvious as more theatres trade their projectors in for digital they will be getting rid of them... someone should be around to preserve the equipment. Maybe you could start a muesum about projection systems... maybe that is how your job will evolve... maybe you can purchase older films and 'the last authentic projection movie house' left on earth!

This is a wonderful insight into the art of cinema projection. It is beautifully filmed and reflects the true satisfaction you get from your job. I will never view going to the cinema in the same way again - thanks to you! A brilliant and most creative piece of video.

I loved this film...thank you. You do the job that my Dad, his brother and their father (my grandfather) did between 1938 and 1955 in Cinemas in the centre of Birmingham. Like you, they loved it until it began to fade out as more and more cinemas closed. I only wished I'd had opportunity to follow in their footsteps for a few years and carry on a family legacy and specialty.
  •
  • Just beautiful...made me well up a little.

may I echo all the others' notes. I'm a corporate digi projectionist, but I made my start as the only one who could fix the school's 16mm projectors. Now I'm shopping for my own theatre and drive-ins. Cinema Paridiso, all time fave, and you're living the life. Lucky. And a perfect short w/ perfect music...you must be walking on air. Great dig about the ripoff concessions. Again, simply loved the tunes. More power 2 u, peace.
