16. HF100 Low-light with Cinemode 24p
USE DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW ON THE RIGHT (for better quality).

Rendered to WMVHD with Vegas using Studio to Computer RGB filter (unfortunately needed otherwise blacks become gray, better alternative is to use 32bit and gamma 2.222 but will take more cpu).

See some more info here: lucienk.spaces.live.com/blog/cns%21A4AE3FB12A26635%21712.entry

Quick test using very low-light with Cinemode 24p (note didn't remove pull-down). I'll probably use cinemode 30p for low-light and indoor shots.
It was pitch black so it's fairly accurate.

shoots pretty well in the dark! did you have the built-in light on or was this without any additional light source?

Without the built-in light but a small outdoor light was on (above the camera).

The cinemode lowers the gain a lot so you get very low noise but you need one of the progressive modes so the picture won't be too dark.

I did a few more tests and found cinemode 60i in this low-light is too dark. Cinemode 30p is definitely better match with cinemode in very low-light

So is it safe to say to shoot evening in door family video in 30p is the best all around choice?
  • Lucien Kleijkers 10 months ago
I would say so and preferably with cinemode to get more detail (lower contrast) and less gain (noise).

For low-light I always use now 30p with cinemode. Alternative is spotlight (darker and more contrast).

  • I'm impressed that blacks remains black. Thought HF100 would pump up gain to 18 dB. At this german website camcorder-test.com/camcorder.html you can compare the low light (12 lux) performance of different camcorders (HF100, SR11, SD9, ...). HF100 is a bit more yellow than SR11 at 12 lux at 50i, but both look reasonable. SD9 is definitely out of this league.

In the default full auto mode it would do that. See here comparison between default and different framerates/cinemode: zbaouw.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p20U7JNVxq5xQ2FH_au7RgiU4UybIsw6l1ogPmRKS4e-Vx92bXjttcPeTno79iwj405wWUtLIY0LLifRS0js22g

See more info on low-light in my review above in the link. Basically the 24p and 30p will give 1.5 and 1 stop advantage. The cinemode will give you good W/B and better dynamic range in low-light.

In the review link above you find more comparisons.

I found cinemode 30p in low-light best trade-off since motion is still fairly fluid and you get a 1 stop advantage (example: vimeo.com/942017).

The spotlight is an alternative with no gain (so slightly darker but more colorful without the cinemode).

If you use inverse telecine you should be able to get rid of choppyness at 24P. Then you will get the best low light performance because of the slower rate. According to the Camcorderinfo review of the HF100 the you lower the lux needed for a baseline IRE rating from 6 to 4.

Yeah I was too lazy to remove it. Fortunately tmpgenc Xpress now officially supports AVCHD and it has remove 2:3 pulldown.
However I don't think the choppyness would be completely gone. The only solution is to pan slower.

I use 30p instead therefore. Still decent low-light and better motion. It's only 0.5 stop slower than 24p.

I think I like 30P as well, 24P is too much drama in AVCHD & HDV Canons

since when has the camera 30p? it has 25p... or am i mistaken... here it says 50i oder 25p...(PAL)
  • Lucien Kleijkers 6 months ago
    PAL has 25p or 50i, NTSC has 24p, 30p and 60i.
    This video is 24p (NTSC).
