In the fall of 2013, RBHS constructed a Passive Solar Greenhouse (PSG) in Kut village to serve as a model platform for securing food, job, and energy efficiency in rural communities throughout Armenia.
The PSG’s position and unique design efficiently collects and releases heat during the night. Within the greenhouse is a Passive Refrigeration Storage system that allows space for storing produce to be delivered to food service providers.
The primary goal of this project is to provide the local population with access to fresh vegetables year-round, especially in the winter, when produce is scarce and expensive.
The greenhouse allows for education and community job creation opportunities including:
- training from our experts on greenhouse management
- crop selection and cultivation
- proper storage of produce
- sales and marketing of goods
The recruitment of young people, especially young women, is a primary component of the project.
