MUCH MORE TO COME!

I filmed my friend David wiping out in extremely choppy horrible storm waves on his skimboard. I attached a GoPro HD Hero to a broom pole and we had a fun (yet freezing) time throwing the thing around!

great work Patrick again! What setting did you shoot it in? also did you color correct it at all in post? Also curious about how you worked with the clips in Final Cut if thats what you used, and what settings you compressed it for vimeo?
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
Thanks man! I shot it in 720 60p and conformed it to 24p to make it slo-mo.
I did minor color correcting in post to crush the blacks a bit.

I had to use compressor to convert everything to XDCAM so I could edit the files in FCP

    What Converter did you use?

    sick video.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
it's not a tripod it's the pole taken off a mop with the GoPro HD clamped onto it! HAHA

Cool idea, can you do it again with someone that is good at skimbording, you could get some way cool shots.
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
Well this guy is really good at skimboarding, these waves are just almost un-skimmable and choppy and horrible. We just wanted to go out into a storm and see if it was possible to do.
  • Matt West plus 2 years ago
yeah right, fair call, he seemed to bail as soon as he mounted it nearly every time, got any vids of him ripping, i'd be keen to check em out.
  • Matt West plus 2 years ago
    dude, I watched it again.
I musta been in a critical mood, it's a RAd vid!

i KNEW i recognized those railings in the shot up on the cliff. sometimes my family stays in the Cliffs hotel in shell beach. i hope you went to the splash cafe for clam chowder while you were there :D
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
Haha yea it was right by the cliffs hotel! The cliffs backyard patio area is where the really high up establishing shot was.

Did you use something on the glass to help it stay clear after it got wet?
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
No for some reason the water just runs right off it. Sometimes obviously big drops of water got on it, but I just blew on it a couple of times and everything came off. Keep in mind the glass part is smaller than a penny.

where are you located? and what video editor are you using to do the color effects?
    Love the vid
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
I am currently located in San Francisco California. Color effects are done with Final Cut Pro 3-way color corrector. I barely color corrected this at all. I just crushed the blacks a bit.

Oh man you totally rock! That was awesome. I have to get one now. Picture quality was excellent. Favourite part is you at the end swearing your head off. Me and the kids were cracking up big time at that. SWEET!

amazing! ive been looking at getting one of these little go pro hd's because Im way too scared to take my camera out in crappy conditions and it could lend its self to some really artsy stuff. I wanted to try out the slow mo like you done drawing out the 60 to 24. From looking at your video it seems to capture movement quite nicely.

Sickest video! I don't understand how you guys just threw the camera around? Crazy!
  •
  • Sansom Media 2 years ago
these cameras are pretty fun to play with. i like the perspective of the pole when you're throwing it around. on a side note, can't say i'd do anything in that water. great job.

Hei dude, I have a GoPro HD HERO to. But i have a problem with adobe premiere pro, so i have to convert it first. And how you earlier told, that you converted it to XDCAM. What program did you use? Because i see you haven't lost quality in your wicked edit! Can you please tell me what you exactly do, before you edit a clip?

PS i really like when you trow with the camera in the edit! Nice shots.:)
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
I don't really know anything about premiere, I just used compressor, an application that's part of final cut studio, to compress all my files.

  • Trevor Leyenhorst 2 years ago
wow, this is great pov stuff. it's such a weird sensation when the camera is handed off, because i am so stationary in my seat here at home and everything else seems to be swirling around, yet it is really the other way around...

this is more of an experience than a video.

Hi mate, Have you done any special post work to 2:01 scene. ?
Cause it just looks so sorrel..
    Almost looks like CG affect
  • Patrick Lawler plus 2 years ago
at 2:01 where he falls in the water? There was absolutley no CG in the video, the ONLY things I did to this video in post was edit it, and crush the blacks with apple's 3-way color corrector, that's all I did.
