After making a series of edits on an unrelated video using Adobe Premier, I removed the source footage, which then left only the edits behind. These edits became like a formula: I could upload footage at random, which would then be structured by my previous edits, acting as kind of automated choreographic score. I was interested in art making as a formulaic process, and felt that equally formulaic cultural touchstones (in this case, Friends and Seinfeld) served as appropriate fodder. I'm interested in the way that these shows, despite their explicit subscription to a historical formula, produce an enduring cultural-historical significance. Pop culture as ritual, formula as performance.
