Bishop Rick Painter of Christ the King Liturgical Charismatic Church in Phoenix, Arizona, was convicted and sentenced to jail for ringing his church bells. The bells register at a lower decibel than nearby traffic on a busy street. Now, with help from the Alliance Defense Fund, Bishop Painter is appealing his conviction and joining two other churches in a suit against the city of Phoenix for its vague and unconstitutional noise ordinance.

BY ALL APPEARANCES… INSIDE AND OUT… PHOENIX’S CHRIST THE KING CATHEDRAL IS JUST YOUR TYPICAL… AMERICAN CHURCH.
(NAT POP)
BUT… THERE IS ONE FACT THAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT…
Bishop Rick Painter SOT @ 00:27
“I’m Bishop Rick Painter. I’ve been in the ministry 50 years, and last year, I became a convicted criminal.”
IF YOU THINK THAT’S SURPRISING… JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU HEAR WHY…
Bishop Rick Painter SOT @ 00:39
“I was convicted of two criminal misdemeanors for ringing the bells of the church.”
(NAT POP – BELLS)
Gary McCaleb SOT @ 00:50
“The Bishop was actually convicted and sentenced to a jail sentence for just simply ringing his bells. This case seems ridiculous. Certainly in America in 2010, we oughta be able to ring a church bell without being criminally prosecuted.”
WHEN THE BELLS RING AT CHRIST THE KING… THEY REGISTER AT A LOWER DECIBEL THAN TRAFFIC ON AN ADJOINING BUSY STREET… STILL THE CITY OF PHOENIX TOOK AN UNPRECEDENTED HARD-LINE STANCE AGAINST BISHOP PAINTER… CALLING THE BELLS A VIOLATION OF THE CITY’S NOISE ORDINANCE.
Bishop Rick Painter SOT @ 01:26
“When we went to court and I was found guilty, to be honest with you, I was shocked because honest, straight from my heart, I still don’t believe I broke a law.”
WITH HELP FROM THE ALLIANCE DEFENSE FUND… BISHOP PAINTER IS APPEALING HIS CRIMINAL CONVICTION AND JOINING TWO OTHER CHURCHES… SUING THE CITY OF PHOENIX OVER THAT ‘VAGUE’ NOISE ORDINANCE.
Bishop Rick Painter SOT @ 01:50
"It’s a constitutional issue, a freedom issue, the freedom of the faith of Christians in the United States.”
Gary McCaleb SOT @ 01:58
“In this case, it looks like targeted discrimination. Under the ordinance as it now stands, the pastor could have gone out with a hot dog stand and played ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ almost all day long, much louder than he was playing the church bells, and been entirely legal in the eyes of the city of Phoenix.”
Bishop Rick Painter SOT @ 02:16
“The IRS already regulates what I can say in the pulpit. I was prosecuted for ringing church bells. Where’s it going to stop? What’s next? Somebody has to push, and push hard, back against this encroachment. And God chose me.”
