The Jacob's Ladder Trail: The first great mountain crossing.

The Jacob's Ladder Trail: The first great mountain crossing.

Ernest Urvater

The Jacob's Ladder Trail in western Massachusetts was the route for the first crossing of a mountain range in the United States, by a railroad--that was in the 1830's. Then, early in the 20th century it was the site of the first automobile roadway crossing of a mountain range. This program, 44 minutes long, describes this historic and beautifully scenic 35 mile stretch of state highway 20 between Westfield and Lee, a place bypassed by time when the Massachusetts Turnpike was constructed.
