fantastic, love the story, photo, ++ color grading, what camera was used?
  • Jarrett Lee Conaway 2 years ago
thanks! It was shot on the RED in 4K. We did color grading at a small post facility, but it was on a hardware based system.

Wow, this is a great film. You did a good job with the characters, and creating an interesting film in under 5 minutes. My only problem was the narrators voice, I felt it didn't fit too well with the film. But that said, what you did with the narrator, making him almost every spare character was pure genius! Good job! :)
  • Christopher Prouse 2 years ago
I rather liked the narrators voice... gave it an added bit of authenticity imho.
  • Michael Dunbar 2 years ago
Good point. I guess it is a matter of personal taste then. Besides, I don't think it detracted from my overall enjoyment of the short. :)
  •
  • Marcos Luger 2 years ago
Beautiful ! may I ask what lenses did you use ?
  • Jarrett Lee Conaway 2 years ago
Zeiss 35mm superspeeds. I believe we had a standard set of 18, 25, 35, 50, and 85 mils. The amazingly talented Jay Visit, who went to USC and was in the Project: Involve program with me was the DP. jayvisit.com

Fantastic short!! It reminds me of a cross between The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Amelie (three of my favorite films). Great work! I especially loved how the narrator was a part of the story itself.
  •
  • That RED camera is beautiful! The film itself is also great, I can't wait to see more.

Well, This is an excellent short and superbly executed by Cast and Crew.

I am not totally sold on the narration which seemed at times to tell us what we can clearly see for ourselves. However, the quirky device of Narrator woven into the voices of the minor roles served the film well.

    A joy to watch.

  •
  • 8mm Chic 2 years ago
I kinda agree about the narrators voice. Would be great for some things (very newscaster-ish), but doesn't seem to fit here. Otherwise... exceptional 10/10. How about some older, "less-smooth sounding" guy, or maybe a female narrator w/ a foreign accent, who's friends with the female actress, telling the story of her friend? Seriously tho, minor quibble. Awesome film.

    Superb work !
again, foreigner played by american actress : lost a lot of credibility... but Americans does not really care about culture and credibility....
I don't like "Handsome"... and "Belle" is truly "belle" but cannot speak the language u chose for her.
  • Jarrett Lee Conaway 2 years ago
Hey Damien. Belle wasn't supposed to be French. In the film is says she was studying French. "Belle got a C in French, but she makes up pronunciation with passionate." It was part of the character and I hoped it would be funny.
  • Chris Manning 2 years ago
I got it, and thought the characters were great. The characters truly make the story in this case.

Well, I'm a sucker for romance so I just loved it!
And as a romantic I am left with a teensy problem. Belle is so beautiful, enchanting, sad and vulnerable how could anyone not fall in love with her? She would never be lonely, surely?

    Hi Jarrett,

Thanks a lot for sharing your videos. I must say I absolutely loved this one.
The Storytelling is incredible, and you managed to make it look simple for the audience (I know that's not that easy). It reminds me Jean-Pierre Jeunet sometimes.
The characters are excellent. The casting is really good.
And the images themselves are simply beautyful, specially at the bar.
Great job, I envy you. You can count on me if ever you feel I could help you on anything.
  • Jarrett Lee Conaway 2 years ago
Thanks Laurent! Jeunet and Wes Anderson were definitely influences for the film. Really glad you enjoyed it. Your work is superb and I'll definitely keep in touch.

Well crafted! You really know how to entertain while telling a story. It all flows so well. Even in Turbo, every second of film has a purpose....I like how you don't add fluff.
Great work man! Let me know if I could ever help in any way.

  • Very nice! The film, although some elements are similar (narration) it shouldn't be compared to 500 Days of Summer nor a Wes Anderson flick. This stands alone. It tells a complete, well crafted story with tons of originality! Camerawork, direction and score were spot on!

    Well done!
