Nice timing. Your shots look so randomly perfect, which means they are absolutely not random, which is awesome.
  • Hehe, thank you Joaquin! Thank you for taking a peek at it!

Don't blink for sure!!! This is beyond great... Editing is totally on the mark... The slits of light at the beginning are a visually interesting idea... The 'jump' from rehearsal to show was excellent. The only red shorts on white was unexpected and very visually interesting. You took some great dance/dancers and put their work into an entirely new encapsulation. You started with great dancing, and went UPHILL from there!! Having some of the rehearsal time is also good. Wow... Where/how do you think this stuff up??? It never seems to end.

ps. When do we get your seasons 2 and 3??? :) ;)
  • Thank you, Doug! The artistic director approached me asking for an exciting piece to go well with his vision, so I took a shot at it. I crammed all three seasons into one little video...I thought Summer's score would go best with it. I really appreciate the insight from you! Thank you so much!

Exciting and packed with drama! This one looked really professional.

just curious, was all camera work by hand again or did you use something to help stabilize the camera? Thanks
  • Steve, thank you! Yes, it was all handheld. I really apreciate the kind words!
  •
  • Yay! My friends are so talented. Always impressive work Matt.

Did I catch some inspiration (bw to color) from "A Single Man"? :)

Great! really a modern way to film stage dance, good rhythm, energy, images. tell us more - how did you do it?
What kind of camera, shooting time, post production...?
    Curious

  • Thank you! I've always wanted to capture dance, and this is the way I am have wanting to see it done for years. The shooting time was just shooting the dancers for a few hours during their rehearsal, and then just editing it as if I were putting a puzzle together, and then it just turned into this, hehe. I used the Canon HV40 for shooting and Sony Vegas for editing. I was a little worried that the lighting might have caused an issue with how little light was there, but it worked out pretty well I think. :)

I recently tried shooting inside a hall with low lighting, like the kind in some of these shots. What setting did you use on the HV30 to capture the incredible contrasts in color? Are you using a LetusMini 35mm adapter?

    Appreciate any tips.
  • I just used it on it's basic modes pretty much. Cinemode, Manual Focus, and Manual White Balance. Nothing special. :)
  •

  • I am at a loss for words, but I'll try.
Just beautifully executed! The colors, the moves, the cuts... I counted at least 30+ clips of less than 2 seconds, synced perfectly to the music. Stunning filming performance, followed by exquisite editing.
    Bravo!
  • Thank you! I didn't even grasp how quickly the shots go by, so after I watched my render I had to make sure that there was a disclaimer for people not to blink, hehe.

What did you shoot on? The color is awesome! How did you get the colors to be so vibrant?
  • Hey Stephen,

I shot on the HV40. I had to do a lot of color correction in post to get the colors to look right because they kept changing the lighting non-stop. Just tinkering with the post got me the colors. Thank you!

Stunning. I actually thought about doing a video like that a while ago. Love the zooms, intensity of the cutting.

But Matthew, get rid the the director at the end, I think that's an anti-climatic end. End on the dancers, way more powerful.
  • Steve, I really appreciate the feedback! Thank you for checking it out! It was the director's promotional video, so I wanted to put a very prominent image of him. I agree that it shouldn't have ended on that image, but I didn't have a better closing image. I personally found it powerful to show the director essentially cutting off the music and dancers like a conductor would have. Oh hey, I'm doing a Sub Pop Records music video and I'm using Zacuto products on it! :D Lots of camera rig stuff...AND the gunstock shooter you gave me! We're trying to combine the Canon HV40 and 7D for the first time. I hope you like it! :D

Matthew - you should be so proud - this is an exceptional artistic piece!!! I am a performing artist (pianist), and I have also spent my entire career in stage work (dance, theatre, opera). Since I understand how filmed stage performances can often look "flat" I am inspired by how you got "into" the action, it's quite immersive!

You did a great job at hitting downbeats and musical cues. The video is the perfect length too! This is just sensational Matthew - congrats!!
  • Paul Hamilton plus 2 years ago
Oh yeah, and what Steve Weiss said! heh heh....
  • I really appreciate that, man! It was a very nice challenge to not make a typical ballet video. Every dancer was so full of emotion that I think they carried it very very well. Thanks for the comment! :D

Thanks for sharing Matthew, It's certainly has that 'WOW' factor and the editing is great and in time with the music. You are a great promising filmmaker, if I can give you some advice I would work on the emotional depth and impact of your films to give them that same strength of the first viewing on repeated watching then it will give them longevity, and make them stronger with more resonance for the audience. You are improving all time. Well done. best wishes Mark
  • Thank you for the feedback, Mark! I'm definitely trying to hone in on crafting my work to make it hit harder and longer. I'm really glad you took time to check it out! Thank you again for the insight! :D

Really nice piece Matt! you really make that HV40 shine!
I really liked what seemed to be 'moving' lighting during the B&W rehearsal section at the top.. really nice pacing and of course that great transition to performance/color (almost Tarrantinoish) you did a great job of building the pace which draws you in even more! great color effects as well!
    bravo!

Another great one, Matt! As everybody I liked very much the rehearsal footage in the begining! Excellent transition to color (and the return to B&W not to make it predictable)! I can see that you pushed yourself a lot here! I know how it feels (trying) to follow a dancer´s foot in the dance floor! It´s like following a thirsty humming bird :o) I´m glad you´re growing every step, cant wait to watch your videoclip! Keep them cumming! Cheers!
  • I really appreciate that! Thank you!! Encrouagement like this keeps me going! :D

  • Haha, thank you Craig!!! Thank you for giving it a chance, hehe! I'm surprised that the footage came out looking good in the low light conditions I had. Thank you for the encouragement, man! :D

Matthew. I took my wife to the theater to see Swan Lake, many years ago and I didn,t really dig it (that much). Your film on the other hand gave ballet a whole new energy and perspective. This is what you do best, forging an orginal approach to your subject. Converting the ordinary into extraordinary. Top job mate. Darren.
  • Thank you so much, Darren! If you're ever in Seattle and want to try out a dance performance again you should really book tickets to an Olivier Wever production...he's definitely the person to make you fall in love with dance. He gave me an amazing subject to make a striking video out of. :) Thank you for the very nice words, Darren! Have a great day, man! -Matt

first of, i'm struggling to build up a footage that could be acceptable in artistic terms, and i'm looking around to see how to use film language in modern and fresh ways.

so from Eugenia blog I came here to see this video, and it started to attract me from the beginning.

since your "finger gymnastics", I was confident this video would have been interesting. An original intro, let me say.

the slow pace at which the first part evolves, perfectly fits with the music, calm and preparatory for the start of the dance show.

i'd like to point out that the stronger feeling for the audience, for me at least, isn't the B&W to Color transition, but the pace change of your edit, following the Vivaldi's rithm.

Performers soul comes out of this video, where you used great techniques...i just miss a stage view from above ;-)

there are a couple of points where this video shows an unplanned storyboard, as you say, it is handheld and reportage style, but looks more staged. So the hard post and editing work really makes the difference.

I also found a class touch the "finger end" at 02:14, recalling the start !!!

Showing the Director at the end not only has a strong image impact, but also fits with the purpose this video has, not a test as many here on Vimeo.

To summarize, I'm just a newbie at filmaking, and hope to follow you on the hard way of audience appreciation.

Keep up the good work ;-)
  • Thank you very much for the message filled with stuff! hehe. I appreciate the disection of the piece!! Thank you so much! :D
