During my college summer break in 1989, I was staying at my dad's place which happened to be on a residential airport. At about 8 a.m. I was rudely awoken by a helicopter that landed outside.
With nothing better to do that Sunday morning, I decided to roll out of bed and go flying in my little $5500 Luscombe two seat airplane. So I went out and hand propped the airplane and taxied across the runway to get some gas.
As I was filling it up, I couldn't help but feel I was being watched. Sure enough, there was a cameraman filming me. A minute later and a reporter came up to me and asked me some questions about the local NTSB office.
Keep in mind I literally rolled out of bed 10 minutes earlier. I didn't shower--I just wanted to go flying and hopefully not see anyone I knew.
After the interview, I was shocked to see no less than 20 people in the office when I went to pay for the gas. Apparently the reporter had called ahead to let them know he wanted some opinions on the subject.
So I should apologize to everyone who was hoping to get on T.V. that day. But at least this little video is a snapshot into what I was doing almost 20 years ago.
