FINALLY ASSUMING GENOCIDE
For the first time, in front of a film camera, Indonesian officials are admitting: what happened in 1965-68 when at least 500.000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were jailed was genocide and extraordinary crimes.
AFTER A LIFE IN PRISON
In the film we've documented the stories of TAPOLS (political prisoners) who spent a long time in jail, mostly school teachers, students, housewives, trade unionists, writers, journalists, and foremost women from the women's movement Gerwani, who were accused of having killed five generals. This is their story.
TOWARDS DEMOCRACY
General Suharto came to power in one of historys' most brutal putches 1965. He managed to build a fortune – by robbing his country some claim – and died a billionaire.
Since his death in 2008 Indonesia has moved towards democracy. But violations of human rights are still taking place regularlym, according to human rights organisations.
MUNIR
Laureate of the Swedish alternative peace price, The Right Livelihood Award 2002, Munir Said Thalib was murdered in 2004. Usman Hamid, the new leader of Munir's organisation KONTRAS, has been threatened with criminal defamation charges after demanding to investigate Munir's murder further and witnessing in the trial against the suspects in 2009.
