Our speaker at the January 2010 CreativeMornings ( creativemornings.com ) was Michael Bierut of Pentagram hosted at the fabulous Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn. It was our biggest CreativeMornings audience yet with 300 (!) NYC creatives attending. It's a brand new talk on the subject of "Clients". A big giant thank you to Roland Lazarte ( hellorolo.com/ ) who once again has been generously offering his video and editing skills.

What Michael Bierut has taught me today:

    1. Clients are the difference between art and design

    2. Aspire to work on projects that excite you

    3. Clients are people: amazing and temperamental, just like designers.

    4. Clients are actually the catalyst for change

    5. Best clients love design or are indifferent. They are confident in your abilities.

    6. Never "educate the clients". It's a partnership to which they also bring knowledge.

    7. "Work with people smarter than you" T Berg Hollman.

    8. Look for clients, passion, trust and courage (courage with a little "c")

8a. Be a designer with loyalty, honesty, dedication and trust

    9. Unless you make changes, you will get more of the same.

    10. If you're unhappy about a client situation, focus on reversing things.

    11. Speak to clients not as a "expert" but as someone who cares about them.

    12. If you can find 5 great clients, you're set for life. If you're lucky you'll have more.

    13. Some of your best projects might be free.

    14. Some bad clients have good purposes.

    15. Every once and a while, rarely, you will need to walk away.

I wish I saw this talk 20 years ago. (It took that long to learn all this stuff through experience.) I will pass it on to all the new, young designers I meet.

this taught me about more than just clients. Thank you
  •
  • This talk had the effect of retouching and finalizing my understanding of the designer-client relationship, which was slowly building up from my relatively short experience with clients. I really hope I can manage to maintain this vision in future, without ever getting mad again. Thank you, Michael Bierut, for bringing us up to speed.

some great points that can be used across other creative platforms when dealing with clients, i think allot of these thoughts can be felt not just across design but also the ideas process with clients
