Mo’orea, an island, and Teti’aroa, an atoll, in French Polynesia, comprise a complex living laboratory for learning about the preservation of nature and culture in one of the more diverse tropical ecosystems on the planet. Ross students took part in an expedition to the University of California’s Gump Station and the Atitia Cultural Center in Mo’orea to engage in on-site research and fieldwork. They explored the relationship between traditional knowledge and contemporary science by studying and working on a daily basis with elders and local experts to learn dances, music, song, weaving, myths, folklore and navigation techniques, or “wayfinding,” at the Gump Atitia Cultural Center.
