Distributed energy storage is a key supportive technology to help achieve a high proportion of renewable energy usage at high reliability. On October 17th, 2013, the California CPUC voted 5-0 to implement targets for distributed energy storage and therein took the U.S. lead in encouraging this emerging potential market. Renewables and other forms of intermittent generation increase greatly in value when the energy can be stored and shifted to meet demand and maintain reliability. Michigan brings strong technical and manufacturing capabilities to develop small and mid-size energy storage solutions from its automotive sector. DTE has also recently gained experience from a trial system in community energy storage. What Michigan policies should be in-place to support this growing market?
