New Canon EOS-1D Mark IV HD camera test. I shot this with a body on loan from my Canon Rep in LA. I wanted to really look at the HD video 1080p function through most of the ISO settings, from 500 ISO (a typical "normal" rating for a professional video HD or film camera) to 6400 ISO, which is about as fast as I would ever need to imagine going for any night filming. the settings were 2.8 t-stop, 23.98 fps, 40th of a second shutter, neutral look setting.

I shot with no lights other then the ambient street lamps in down town LA. I also shot a Canon 7D and a Canon 5d right along side it. I will post them all, so we can compare the low light abilities of all the HD camera functions side by side. I am a professional DP who is really interested in pushing these video cameras to the limits and seeing what professional applications these cameras may have.

The 1d really dominated in the final decision. I took the footage into a post house in LA and timed in professionally with a davinci 2k color suite. the 1d had less video noise and did not have banding black issues that the 5d has in super low light areas of the frame. And the 24p and the dual processors of the 1d seem to make it the go to pro video still camera for certain situations. I still shoot my network shows on really expensive Sony f35 and Arri d20 cameras for now...

Thanks for your review Nelson, I found it truly useful.
This is the first test that convinces me in terms of the 1D mark IV video capabilities. Until now all the footage seen on the internet appeared slightly washed out.
Next week I am going to shoot three music videos in a row and I was wondering: 7D or 1D? Did you also try the 7d? What do you think...Can I take a chance with the 1D ( I am extremely tempted) or I just rely on the 7D?
As I can see the rolling shutter effect is still present...
    Have a great day!

hi, I am currently uploading the 7d test of the same exact shots right now. should take an hour or so. then I will post the 5d test of the same shots later tonight

I think that the 1 d is superior but I will let the tests speak for themselves.

Great! My good Varicam is a pain in the neck when you have to travel around the world with a small crew. I guess I'll make up my mind as soon as I see your other tests.
    Thanks.

Thanks for posting the tests. Very interesting to see the side by side comparisons. Did you have some kind of image-stabilization issues? The video results do not look like the kind of natural shake you get from simply holding a small camera in your hands.

I was shooting on a 100mill prime, so its a bit shakey. I had two usc film students with me and they had the wide and medium zooms and I was stuck with the long prime. with a camera body this small, I need to get a shoulder mount before the camera could be viable for professional shooting on longer lenses.

So, how do you judge this new 1D mark IV...Any clear video improvements over the other 2 cameras? I am very curious to know your opinion...If you had to choose one of these models to shoot a music video, which one would you pick?
  • Nelson Cragg plus 2 years ago
Yes, there are some clear video improvements over the seven and five models. The canon rep said the sensor was newer technology, and that the dual processors of the one d was a factor in less noise and simply a cleaner image in low light areas of the frame. Again, we are talking pro level applications here, for broadcast tv and film, so the reality of most people noticing these differences are slight. All the cameras were outstanding, but the 1d had less noise and less digital banding issues in final color correction.

Thank you Nelson. I am on my way to the store...
I think you did a great job with these tests, extremely useful. The last two questions I have: has the rolling shutter issue improved as well? No overheating like in the 7D? Anyway, the 1D has a superior filmic look...That's very clear. I was a bit worried at the beginning because i thought that the footage it produced was way too soft. Have a great day!

Have to agree with the above comments, these tests are quit useful. Had not considered the 1D as an option so this really does change the game for me..

Thanks Nelson, great work all around

Nice. Just got the 7D...sold my Nikon, which I love. Cutting a show they shot on the 7D and it looks really sweet.

So...some of these locations remind me of "Special."

    Nelson,

Thank you so much for putting these tests together. This is indeed a side by side comparison of the 1D, 5D and 7D.

I agree the 1D looks the best regarding signal to noise levels in the blacks compared to the 5D and 7D.

I was to the Red Day at Red Studio in Hollywood on Saturday. They put up some resolution tests comparing the Red to the 5D. The 5D had some smear on the higher resolution test images on their new video Projector.

I have been waiting for the Red Scarlet to come out and it is looking like it is going to be a while. Clearly Canan has been leading the way in R&D with this new technology.

Thank you again for sharing these tests here at Vimeo.com. I find these tests most useful and helpful.

    Kindest and sincerest warm regards,

Nelson - long story short, I'd been admiring the cinematography on FlashFoward and decided to look up more info about the production - leading me to your Vimeo page. Wonderful work.

I wondered if you'd encountered any "hot pixel" issues while working with the 1D?

Thank you for all your work both here and in the industry in general.

    Best regards,

superb test, reaaly help, wich is the multi purpose camera, i mean 5d mark ii si for landscapes, studio, weddings, etc.

seems to be that the 1d would do the job of the 5d and much more like sports, plus more rate speeds for video...

wich one you think is the best choice?
