1. Video Montage: Urban Tranquility - Abu Dhabi, UAE …
2 years ago
Hi guys, this is my first personal video project. I'm a Filipino from Cagayan de Oro City, currently working in Abu dhabi. First time with video shooting and pretty lucky its with the Canon EOS 7D. I never had a video camera of my own before until now. I'm still trying to learn this thing thru good ol' self-learning and getting inspiration from a lot of people all over the internet. But oh well, there is a first time for everything I guess. Please don't be too harsh on the critiques! hehe.

All shots done in abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Using up 2 separate mornings and one cold afternoon for video timelapse. I also tried to shoot when there was nobody around, like early morning or when everybody else is working and in the office. Even tho I have a lot of things in mind, I was not able to really stay long out there and shoot. I have a very busy schedule and very little free time.

All shots using Canon EOS 7D.

LENSES
Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L USM
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D

(I just wish I had at least a fluid head, a Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 coz 24mm on 7D is not very wide; because of 1.6x crop factor on Canon, and if somebody would let me borrow a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM for a few days, that would be great! -oOo-Shameless plug-oOo-)

Editing was in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Very n00b Color grading done in Adobe After Effects CS4, preparation of EOS 7D Videos using MPEG Streamclip for windows.

System used was an average laptop called HP Pavilion DV6. It has intel Core 2 Duo P800 2.53GHz but still very slow to render and convert Full HD 1080p. It's "slowness" frustrating. But it still gets the job done, it just needs a little more time tho.

Music: Chill Sessions Chill in Arabia: Snow Desert - Speechless Project (TQT Mix) (So! sorry I forgot this one on the video ending credits, shame on me)

Special Thanks:
Friends and family. Erwin Magbanua (vimeo.com/wingdezigns) for being my mentor in this Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects thingee. Titz Tizon for being my on-call consultant for all things about Nikon, Canon and beyond. Ratfobya for being my drive and inspiration. Wella Maria Hong for being my trusty assistant.

(Sorry for the letterbox on the video. Will upload a larger version later.)

Most Colorgrading learned from: VideoCoPilot and GreyscaleGorilla and youtube

UPDATE: I have uploaded a new video without a letterbox . Resolution is 1280 x 720 - 24fps - H.264 - mp4

[workflow]
The awesome PATRICIO MUñOZ of 7DPro.com helped me in putting up a short Q&A workflow article on the 7D.

Whats your workflow, gotta give more details it looks nice. Did you use a dolly?
  • mungkey 2 years ago
Hi there james. I did the workflow as some of the experienced people on the internet blogs and forums told me. I can't edit the videos directly from the camera so I have to convert the videos to a decompressed format using Cineform NEOSCENE but i didnt have that so I used a free alternative called MPEG StreamClip. Then I import them into either after effects or Adobe Premiere. But for this one, because I had no previous experience, I selected the clips that I like (from the converted videos) in Adobe Bridge, and then, imported each of them to Adobe Premiere with music and cut. Then I right click each of the clips in Premiere and create composition then color grade each one of them manually. Ive heard its much easier and more effective to use Magic Bullet Looks or Colorista but I dont have those AE tools, so I used built in AE tools like curves, levels, contrast, tint and colorama.

For the dolly, I used a compact dolly. Check the first poster in this thread. He is the creator of the one i'm using.

Beautiful music...Could you tell me who it is?
    Thanks for sharing
  • mungkey 2 years ago
Omg! I just realized I forgot to \credit the music! Thanks for reminding me on that Syl!

It's from Chill Sessions: Chill In Arabia
Title of the song is Snow Desert - Speechless Project (TQT Mix)

I guess I have to re-render this vid again and place it at the ending credits. Takes hours to render! =D

    Hi there. nice work.

one little correction. the background track is a Hindi song(Indian) from the movie '1942 A Love Story'. The song name is 'Kuchh na kaho'...google it for further details. & please give due credit.

ok Great footage , really impressive ,..BUT with over 30 seconds of credits at end you fail to credit the music track??? i really don't get why people do that? Its at least 50% of a finished peice , yet you chose to show credit to things like the laptop that was used to edit this , but don't think its important to credit the musician / artist?? i don't get it.
  • mungkey 2 years ago
Thanks androoow! And I definitely hear you man. Sorry , I'm sure it's kind of annoying if you see this thing happening around the net over and over. This wasn't intentional, I admit I forgot to place it at the end credits probably because of excitement. I guess I'll have to re-render sometime soon or place it in the desc. Title of the bg music is Snow Desert - Speechless Project (TQT Mix) from Chill Sessions Chill in Arabia.

The laptop and other tools used were put there for a reason tho, not for show. Friends always ask me what was used here and there and so it was just a small piece share back to the community what was shared to me - relevant information.
  • androoow 2 years ago
Thank you mungkey for replying to my ranting , and for letting us know the artist.. look forward to seeing more of your work.. many thanks ..

Hey mungkey, nice work, how did you get the traveling footage? Was that just handheld with the z-finder?
  • mungkey 2 years ago
Thanks Brice. I have some video footage with the z-finder but not on this one. On these shots, I just used the z-finder on the park shots. When the sun is too bright, I can't clearly see the image on the LCD and the blacks and highlights tend to clip hard. But when I use the z-finder, I get to see the real quality and exposure + colors. It's a very helpful little tool.
  • Brice plus 2 years ago
Thanks! And how do you get that smooth traveling motion on your shots without a dolly?
  • mungkey 2 years ago
no man, I forgot to mention, I was using a compact dolly. I got it from glidetrack (first poster in this thread)

  • androoow 2 years ago
@goma .. fair enough i do need to relax, you are right..sorry, i do get abit heated when no credits are given to those who deserve it .. its just one of those things that get to me... agree though that the footage was epic and i appreciate that mungkey was gracious to share it .. so cheers

you're very welcome. btw what lens adapter are you using for the nikon lens?
  • mungkey 2 years ago
It's a cheap adapter that my girlfriend got from the Philippines. The brand name says "Merlin". It's good for small lenses but I wouldn't trust it for heavier ones. It can only support lenses with aperture rings on them and only manual focusing as usual. It can mount a Nikon G Lens but you cant control the aperture.

There is a good Nikon G Adapter tho, but I don't have it. It's on this website ... just in case ur interested

Well, first time out, you have certainly grasped the principal of movement in video making and interrelated shots.

It is a random montage though and I sometimes feel we, as viewers, need some more direction. Even it is only linear eg: Luxury of the Highrise slowly giving way to the stark and beautiful sterility of the desert.

Excellent use of grading and the compact Glidetrack. I have this Alastair Brown bit of kit too..it is interesting how 20" is enough to give the flow to the image. (You could also try a 'Post' motion in about 5% on top of it.)

It is very bright where you are..were you using an ND fader on your excellent 24 -70L. Or did you increase the shutter speed? Increasing the shutter speed would add jitter...but I can see no indication of it.

    Good work.
  • mungkey 2 years ago
    Thanks Bob!

I really enjoyed taking the shots as well as doing the editing. It's learning and practice all together. I would love to learn more about other types of shots and camera moves as well as story-telling techniques over time. I also enjoyed using the small portable dolly. I was using a very basic set of tools. Very startup kind of kit. I used a photo tripod with a ballhead (that seriously needs oiling!). and for the camera, I used only the 24-70 with a UV filter and the 7D. I didnt have the fader. sometimes I have to use my hand to block flare in front and on top of the lens hood. And sometimes I remove the UV filter to reduce the reflection thing on the glass (I dont know what they call that and why it happens tho). I depleted my savings just to get the 7D! Haha! i guess I need to save up for a couple of months again for the other things like the Fader. I kept the shutter at around 1/60 and sometimes lower. I also noticed something weird on the videos result if I increase the shutter to a very high value. On daytime shots, I used lowest ISO and then I increased the aperture. I didnt have much of a problem regarding the doF tho because I was shooting scenery just around the place where I was living and no people so a very deep depth of field was okay, at least for the shoots.

I will probably be doing more vids from just around the city after this one. I do not have a car and still don't know how to drive. My only transport is the public bus and my two active feet! oh well, I guess I have to walk around more! :D

the desert is a good idea! But its too far! hopefully I will get that chance to shoot some really good places from around here! I'd definitely share what I will find!
  • bob lorrimer plus 2 years ago
The investment in the 7d accessories to suit its bounty of lenses appears never ending. I have just bought an ND Fader (one!) and now I realise the lens Hood will no longer fit. The outer ring of a 77mm Fader being 'stepped up'.

However For £1 I bought a baby buggy UMBRELLA/SUN SHADE which happens to be black. It has a built in Clamp......which fastens perfectly to my Tripod handle.

It keeps the sun of the 7d and casts a shadow over the lens.

    A heroic £1 !

Look forward to more from you.

This makes me want to pick up a 7d or even the 1Dmrk IV and start shooting with them.

Thanks brennan! and yes I was using a GT compact mounted on a still photo tripod. I had a couple of wobbly shots coz the tripod was not heavy enough for the 7D and the 24-70 lens - but its on the tripod(just have to put some weights or have somebody hold it and keep it still), got nothing to do with the gt compact which was super cool. If ur interested, checkout the first poster in this thread. It's from him, it's where I got it! and fyi customer service is very good. no bs

    hey mungkey,

thx fore sharing this great video.

i'd like to ask you to visit my thread "output format" in the forum and post your export settings in Premiere like i did so that me and the other Premiere CS users can compare with my export settings. I would really appreciate it because you are one of the few lads in here using Premiere CS4 for editing. and what do you mean with making a composition in Premiere?

    thx again
  • mungkey 2 years ago
thanks Ecke, I would love to! I never thought there was a forum in vimeo before. I'm kind of new here and all. But since you said it, I explored the options and found it. Im gonna head over to there now to check things out. And again thanks!
