Kein anderer Fotograf seiner Zeit wurde derart kontrovers diskutiert und war Kultfigur zugleich. Mit seinen klassizistischen Fotografien strebte Mapplethorpe stets nach formaler Perfektion, egal ob Torso, Penis oder Vase.
Der Film wandelt auf den Spuren Mapplethorpes in New York und Malibu, aber auch in München und Düsseldorf. Exklusiv äußern sich u.a. die ehemaligen Modelle Lydia Cheng, Ken Moody und "Lady" Lisa Lyon.
Der Film entstand anlässlich der Retrospektive (6.2.-15.08.2010) und in Zusammenarbeit mit dem NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf und der Mapplethorpe-Foundation New York.
