12. 5dm2 + lomo roundfront anamorphics first test
2 years ago
I bought an oct-19 to EOS adapter from Steve Morton. Now I can use my lomo roundfront anamorphics that have not yet received an arri PL mount. Really fun! This is just a test to get the cropping and desqueeze sorted out. Apple Shake makes it easy to do.

No cc on this, just a quick desqueeze and crop on shake (for proper 2.4:1 aspect)

download the original file for higher quality.

P.s. The music is from Max Richter

Your 35mm must look strange perched in front of your 5d. Post some more when you can.
  • Now that would be a wrist breaker! Actually I dont think the 35mm will clear the mirror on the 5d- may be possible on the 7d?

This is really powerful . How much cost a lense like this ?
  • They are about 3-5k a piece depending on the focal length- not that cost effective for dslrs but I allready had them so I just bought the adapter mount. They work really well on Red though.

Nice... I thought this would come to pass... the OCT-19 mount is similar but not the same as a BNCR mount, another candidate ripe for adapting to Canon cameras.

I made some noise a few months back when the 7D was announced asking around about using cine glass on the vDSLRs... then I found an Iscorama and got busy shooting with that. But I have seem Lomos sold for less than what Iscorama's are now being bought for.
  • Yeah the prices on the iscos are crazy- Unfortunately though the cheaper lomo squarefront anamorphics do not fit (they dont fit into the eos camera body)- so you have to get the more expensive roundfront ones. Wish the square ones worked though too- I have a few sitting on my shelf.

    Hunter,
Your images look amazing. The best I've seen for HDSLR anamorphic.

If I were going to go the anamorphic route on the 7D with a PL mount, what do you suggest in terms of glass? I have the Isco 36 but I'm curious if I get a PL mount for the 7D are there options out there for anamorphics for it.

    Cheers,

    Hector

    Fantastic.

I "only" have a Canon 7D, I'm not looking to take such amazing video like you are but some day I hope to!

Two questions though, how do you get the shots at 0:21-0:25 and 0:28-0:30?

The first one mentioned may be a Dolley/rail system correct?

The second one may be some effect or something... I'm just baffled because it seems like sun-flaring.
  • I am using a do-it-your-self camera slider. Similar to the glidetrack or the indie slider, but made from factory parts. Go to dvxuser.com and under the "diy" section you will find something called a "zaza slider" it only cost about $160 and works wonders for the kinds of moves you see. Thanks.

Awesome. I love the use of vintage manual lenses on modern camera, it's just innovative and delivers insane results. Keep up the good work.

Hey! Freaked me out with this vid (having come through from Gizmodo) just a bit when I recognized a shot I was sure was downtown G.R. When I clicked through to find you were here in town, I was gratified. Welcome to Michigan! Nice work!
  • Thanks for the warm welcome- wish GR had a "warmer" welcome for me! ; )

interesting, i've been thinking of this combo lately. really cool to see someone put some video up. ;)

except for some skew, and the jittery hand-held due to the light camera -- this looks pretty great.

    well done.

Great look. Tell me more about the lenses. Lomo you say? Really? Are they 35mm film primes? Thanks. Sam.
  • Yes Lomo! The same folks who make crappy plastic cameras. Lomo is an old company, think of it as a russian ZEISS. They make or have made everything from military equipment to consumer products. Of course they also made lenses for cinematography... These lomo lenses in particular were (as I understand) commissioned by the USSR's beauru of cinematography as an improvement to the squarefront version, they were completely designed from scratch and built by lomo company in late 70's (all the way through the 90's) after the USSR dissovled the fellow who designed these lomo anamorphics moved over to Vantage film where he designed the hawk anamorphics, which are a very similar optical design but with improved mechanics and glass (also better because they are "german"). The reason the roundfronts are such an elegant and genius design for an anamorphic cinematography lens is that it places the anamorphic element in the middle of the lens and the focusing is done with the pair of spherical lenses in the front- this makes the lenses have minimal image "breathing" or " anamorphic mumps" as well as controlled anamorphic flare. Hope that enlightens you a bit! ; )

Hunter, I'm about to buy my first lomo lens all because of your incredible video! So a few questions:

    1. The lens is PL Mount. Was yours? Is Oct19 a better mount?

    2. If I don't have shake, is there another way to de-squeeze? Can you post your workflow?

Thanks for the fresh injection of inspiration. You've brought new life to this already incredible camera.
  • Hey Patrick, you can get a PL mount lens or an oct-19 lens, just be sure to choose the right adapter/mount. Keep in mind the squarefronts dont work as they sit too far in the lens mount.

Many programs can desqueeze and crop, FCP, after effects, motion...

Anybody has tried a 7D with Prime Lomo Oct-19 (non anamorphic) ?

    Sir,

is there any problem in "remove 5D's mirror" to put this len?

Very cool. Thanks for the link to your DIY slider rig. What is your Apple Shake workflow to desqueeze and crop? Any reason you prefer Shake to FCP, AE, etc?
