isn't it kinda like the same like "theEvent" from Redrock?

As a relatively new DSLR user, despite loving the camera the biggest frustration has been trying to find an appropriate rig for hand held shots. I've not yet seen a convincing design at a reasonable price point. Now, I just watched this video and have to say this looks like an excellent design - intuitive, versatile AND the right size.

The way a design excels is through utility, this looks to hit that mark...so the question in my mind was "wow, bet it's expensive" - but having just checked, I have to say I am impressed with what I see. Thanks for sharing this Dennis, this looks like a serious and better contender than others on the market. Regards, Jon.

So you'd say 700+ bucks is the right price for some aluminum rod?
Sure I spend some k$ for camera and lenses... but for a aluminum rod?
  • Glen Elliott plus 2 years ago
Did you even watch the video? Why would you quantify this rig as "an aluminum rod"? If you want to be that general the same can be said about your Glidecam 4000 (which I own, and love as well). It's all about it's functionality and ability to supplement your existing camera gear and improve it's usefulness.

First of all it's a carbon rod and it more than a simple rod. I've worked with several previous rigs and this is by far the best for my needs. Small, portable, light-weight, flexible, and allows for rock solid handheld shooting.

Just one question about the uno and the larger dslr rig - in all the videos and images online there is not one that I've seen which shows either of these rigs with a Zfinder or similar LCD finder attached.... So just wondering if there is any issue using these? I can udnertsand that Cinevate is maybe not keen to have a zacuto product on their promotions but everyone I know who shoot run and gun video on a DSLR uses an LCD finder of some discription - so it would maybe be useful to see how the Uno and DSLR rig fit in with these products?
  • Glen Elliott plus 2 years ago
Because the UNO is so versatile there would be no problem making adjustments to the rig to have it sit closer to your face to be used with a EVF extension like the Z-finder.

If I've heard correctly (rumor?)- Cinevate is working on their own product to fit this market segment as well.

Hi Glen - I'm sure the flexibility of the cinevate systems would have no problem getting a LCD finder on there - I guess my real question is with a wide angle lens - like a 16-35 on a 5D2 - is the front of the rig going to end up in the actual image when the camera is moved back to accommodate the finder. Not so much an issue with Uno I guess - but was wondering more about the larger DSLR rig? I've seen images of the Cinevate Cyclops lcd finder prototype and it would appear to be a little longer than say a z-finder? - which would allow the camera to sit further forward - with less rod sticking out in front?

I see you are using and loving the uno already - have you tried it with a LCD finder and wide angle lens at all?

    Cheers

    Glen

Hey Glen (very distinguished name, btw) ;) ....I just posted a review of the UNO over at Cinema5D and DVinfo (dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eos-5d-mk-ii-hd/472170-i-finally-found-dslr-rig-me.html#post1480971) In the photos I have a 24-70 2.8L mounted which is a similar size to the 16-35 if not a bit larger. I don't however have it set up to use a rear mounted VF. However with the flexibility of the link spacing on the rods and adjustable body brace I can imagine easily shortening it's length to allow the camera to sit closer to your face to be right in line with the Z-finder or upcoming "Cyclops" (ps cool name Dennis). Maybe even mount the link for the body brace directly in front of the link that mounts the camera- that would place the camera much closer to you in that config.

Hi Glen - good review on the Uno - like what you have done with the focus lever! I've got no doubt the camera can indeed be mounted close enough to the face to use a finder. My issue would be in doing this with a 16-35 on the 5D2 the rod would be sticking out the front and possibly in the actual image! On rigs like the Zacuto tactical shooter the camera is mounted ahead of the rest of the rig and the handles are below - so with wide angles there is no issue. Keen to see some more thoughts about / footage from the Uno as you use it a bit more.

    Cheers

To reply to Sebastian's comment - take a look at other DSLR rigs in the market and tell me if you see something equivalent at this quality, with the same degree of utility (in a design sense) for that price?

I didn't say that this was "the right price", I said I was "impressed with what I see". There are other DSLR rigs out there which are much more like an "aluminum rod" at >US$1000 than what Dennis has created.

I may be mistaken, but Cinevate's prices are Canadian $ not US.
  • Glen Elliott plus 2 years ago
I see what you mean about the length of the rod. Maybe Dennis will offer shorter rods for configs like this. Of course you could saw your existing rod down but it can be a mess (ie Carbon!).

I'm absolutely LOVING my UNO! I had another shooter/friend come over this weekend and he handled it for a while- he loves it as well, and will probably be ordering one for his DSLR as well.

Thanks Aaron, LSM, Mark, Jon, Glenn and Glenn for your feedback. We're pretty excited about UNO here. The reason you don't see other viewfinder on there (all of which will work 100% fine btw) is because we have "Cyclops" coming.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

Hi Dennis - yep I'm looking forward to the Cyclops - just wondering on the DSLR rig if moving the camera back to suit other LCD finders might create a slight issue with using wide angle lens - and getting the front of the rig in the image? Just haven't seen any images at all with a finder so hard to judge how far things would have to move back etc... The photos I've seen of Cyclops give the impression that it is maybe a bit longer than say a z-finder? Correct me I've got this wrong....

Any idea when Cyclops will be ready - and are there Cinevate whips in the pipeline for the FF?

    Cheers

    Glen
  • Glen Ryan pro 2 years ago
PS With the the Cyclops will it be attached to the actual camera - like a z-finder - or attached to the rig? Either way will it still be usable if the camera used already has a z-finder frame attached to the LCD?

    Thanks in advance - Glen

here you see my Cinevate DSLR rig used with a Z-Finder. Cinevate products are very flexible and you can use it in different angles and settings. Hearing about "cyclops" I will try to sell my Z-finders quickly on ebay to get a better price now ;-)

Thanks for the images Gero - that looks like really good steup. I am also looking forward to the Cyclops! Email yesterday form Cinevate indicated 3-4 weeks until release - so not long to wait now hopefully!

is there a way to mount the camera with the battery grip onto the uno rig?
  •
  • Cinevate pro 1 year ago
Sebastian, yes. The quick release goes onto the camera base just as it would otherwise. Our follow focus and gears etc. are all designed to handle the extra 4cm or so that the optical center is elevated when using a camera like the 1D, or a 7D/5D with the OEM battery grip added. Cyclops is already set for this scenario. We've been dealing with large vertical offsets like this since day one as our rails were, and are still being used with 35mm adapters.

Ivan, I was hoping no one would mention my state of cardiovascular condition (or lack of). That's what running a busy company like Cinevate will do to a guy :-)

  • Uno is the coolest camera device I've ever had. I just received it yesterday and I'm very happy and excited with it.
