Bird Holland was a pre-Civil War politician in Texas who had seven children by one of his brother's slaves. However, he took three of his sons to Ohio, freed them and paid abolitionists to raise them. One son became a war hero fighting for the Union and after the war was a civil rights leader in Washington, D.C. Another son returned to Texas, won election to the Legislature and passed a bill creating what became Prairie View A&M University. This video is about Bird Holland's death fighting to preserve slavery.
