This is truly incredible! You have created such a visceral experience with the music, images and sound of the rain. This truly submerges the viewer in this immense factory. Beautiful job! I can't wait to see more of your work.

Thanks Amy! The sound is kind of screwed up (muffled) in this vimeo upload, I'm going to try replacing the video file to see if that improves things...

Would you mind sharing your time lapse settings? It was lovely time lapse. It would be so helpful to me.

Also what kind of rig did you have for steadicam or glidecam shot?

I really commend your work you've done here. Great job. Really great. It's not often you find explorers who film and are good at it!
  •
  • rustyjaw 2 years ago
Thanks Morty and Sarah for the kind words.

Morty, the timelapse was just a 10 minute clip sped up approx 1000% (I don't remember the number at the moment).

The moving shots (except for one) were on a Merlin.

Its so much nicer to watch a location instead of looking at pictures. This is great!
  • rustyjaw 2 years ago
It's really different isn't it? I do still love photography because t captures a moment and you can stay in it and study it.

But video can give you a better sense of a space. I think it's more immersive. I love being able to do both.

Great job! It feels like your "flying" or floating through the place. great filiming. What aperture did you have the camera set too for the last long walking scene?
  •
  • rustyjaw 2 years ago
    Thanks SPM!

I honestly don't remember the aperture setting, and afaik, it's not encoded into the video file. Maybe it is, but I haven't found a way to see that info. in the file.

Would be an awesome place to film a horror film or something. Especially with the office chair. I could see someone tied up in it. LOL Great photos too!

This is really good work! Did you use some form of stabilisation because my 7d wobbles like a jelly in my hands!

    Photographically and acoustically gorgeous.

However, We are now seeing a lot of high quality work in this genre. As we come to accept imagery at this high level so does the viewer expect more of the creator in order to truly satisfy his expectation.

Only a year ago...I would not of believed it possible of a DSLR and the net to deliver this kind of sonic and visual quality on my IMAC 24.

Perhaps I am trying to suggest that imagery is no longer 'visceral' without more in the way of content.

@Mark Klassen, feel free to share what you didn't like. I'm still learning video.

@bob lorrimer, yeah, the quality you can achieve these days is pretty amazing. I want to make it clear that a lot of the 'sound effects' (like the patter of the rain, for example) is part of the music. All the other audio was recorded in mono through the 7D's built-in mic. I left the 7D audio in because it adds more atmosphere.

    Hey! This video is amazing!
But I think you should have worked with sound more. The same rain drop sound is kinda too much...
  • rustyjaw 2 years ago
    Hi, thanks for the comment.

Changing the drip sounds would have meant editing the original song, because all of those sounds are in the song. I don't think I could bring myself to alter Monolake's song, even if it made the video more interesting. But, in the end, they don't bother me.

I love the sound of rain. It relaxes me. The different sounds you hear when it lands on certain objects. The camera movements as it moved into different areas and the type of lens, made me feel as though I was there. Loved it.

Really liked it! especially the shots of the rain and the moving shots. Also, how did you create the sound mix? was all the rain sound captured on set?

I did a sort of similar film while on another project at a pipe foundry called Inferno. If you're interested, check it out: vimeo.com/8757895
  • rustyjaw 1 year ago
Despite how it sounds, I didn't do much sound mixing at all. The only two sources were the Monolake track, which has a 'rain' kind of theme, with all the individual droplet and tapping sounds. Under that, I let in some of the original mono sound from the 7D just to add back in some of the atmosphere of the place.

Dumb question but I am curious. How did you get to shoot in the factory. Did you get permission or did you just do it "guerrila" style?
