16. Canon HV20 24p - Night of the Horse 2008 at the De…

HV20 in HDV 24 fps progressive, using "Spotlight" (i.e. zero gain) mode for all clips except the pantomime horse clip just before the end, which was shot in auto mode.

HDV pull-down to 24 fps and transcoded for editing using Cineform HDV. Output was 6 megabit H.264 transcode for Vimeo using MPEG Streamclip.

Great example of the clean look that the Spotlight Mode gives...

I mean, for god's sake, I wish canon would have put at LEAST a gain lock (IE: Don't go above xxdB gain, or even better, gain control.)

    How clipped are your whites?

I agree, wish we didn't have to play tricks to get full control over the camera, but so far, the use of Spotlight to insure zero gain is definitely one of the easiest. Not sure on the white clipping, this was my first test of Spotlight mode since I read the thread on the DVInfo board.

I just bought an HF10 today, so if anyone might be interested in the nearly unused HV20 I used for this video, includes an extra battery, charger, and extended warranty, please drop me a note!

The sound is nice...what's your audio setup for this camera?

    Admirable clips!

Why do you prefer the HF10 over the HV20?

Don't you agree that Canons exhibit a red/purple colourcast and would it be possible to get rid of it?

I could do a better job with a manual white balance, in general, I find that if you take the time to get a proper exposure (the HF10, being a consumer camcorder, wants to make everything bright all the time), set a proper white balance, and audio level, you can get a great image. I enjoy having the control when I want it, but I'm fine with the automatic settings for less critical footage.
