This piece was filmed at Anda Flamenco's audition for Choreographer's Evening at the Walker Art Center in 2013. They came in 11th out of 60 dances, but there were only 10 places. Until then, it never occurred to them what it must have felt like to be the runner up to the runners up in the Miss America pageant...
The palo (flamenco form) of this piece is seguiriyas, one of the oldest and most somber of the flamenco forms. In Choreo #65, the choreographer (Kristina de Sacramento) comes home after a long day, and, as is often the case with the creative muse, the ideas start to flow only when she has walked away from the project for the day. Kristina's real life challenge in choreographing this piece was to respect the seriousness of the form while simultaneously creating a narrative look at the dance and it's flamenco form from outside itself.
