The Australian Wavesailing Title's were held in Margaret River, Western Australia in early February 2010 so this video is just a sample of some of the windsurfing action that happened - shot almost entirely from a helicopter using the Canon 7D with the 24mm f1.4.(opening sequence 15mm fisheye).

    Hi Jamie,
Thank's for that, certainly has been a popular video - there's an additional minute from the opening sequence (cabin) that look's pretty cool so will have to put it into another video one day!

Great video. Was just wondering if you filmed it handheld or used a shoulder mount or anything?
  • Helifotos 1 year ago
    Hi James,
all handheld with some clips stabilised in post - we did have a gyro (ks6) but it died the night before so I wasn't happy! I might add this was quickly edited in 2 hours for the presentation and we were going to edit a better one later but most people were happy with this so we left it. Here's another handheld clip from last week exposureroom.com/members/helifotos/f385abefc049419e94343729f87c8118/ this one has no post stabilising. Nice job on the Guincho video by the way.

    Colin, this is great stuff!

I'm looking into purchasing a 60D for some projects I have coming up in Panama that include heli shots and I was wondering if you had any issues with the helicopter vibration and the rolling shutter. I plan on using the stabilization warp filter in After Effects 5.5 in post but would ultimately like the best raw footage I can get. Also, do you suggest using a lens with image stabilization or without? I'm new to this and want to get it right so any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Hi Justin,
Vibration is an issue and at any height above 10m. you will need some form of stabilisation (kenyon gyro) lens stabilisation won't make much difference. Best to shoot at 60fps and use 24mm lens or wider, zooms lenses are not a good idea as the barrel vibrates and causes issues.
