The theme for the first edition of Masterclass is the joy of designing.
Spanning one day, the assignment comprises of the design of a new built house on the Herengracht in Amsterdam. Within the traditional building envelop of a Canal House, the spatial possibilities of this long and narrow volume are to be explored. Central to this endeavour are the classical aspects of architecture: space, light and movement.
As a final result the Masterclass will bring forth an inspiring series of spatial explorations.

In accordance with the nature of this assignment and due to the limited time available, the favoured means of designing is drawing by hand. Model making by hand and with computer aid is deemed too rigid and time consuming.

The Masterclass starts off with an introduction to the history of the typical Dutch Canal House and its evolution from an engineering task to an architectural challenge.
After this lecture the participants have the rest of the day at their disposal to design a Canal House within a given context. During this exercise professor Van Gameren will conduct individual design assistance.

At the end of the Masterclass, the finalized drawings will be presented, compared and discussed during a general review by the professor and participants alike.
