That's awesome. I love the idea, and it's great to see how easily it worked for just this one store. Imagine what a nationwide effort could accomplish.

This is an absolutely fantastic approach in revolutioning the way business is conducted. You are correct changes can occur when done in numbers.
  •
  • carrotmob plus 3 years ago
Thanks everyone! I'm glad you like it! @Bill, it is my opinion that this may be the first environmental activist group that "the capitalists" DO like. The tradition is to attack business, boycott them, sue them, pass regulations that they don't like, etc. Instead we're using "the market". It's an opportunity for them to get rich, you know? The Carrotmob model is something that everyone from Ralph Nader to Milton Friedman would be down with. I hope. Don't you think?
  • ed 3 years ago
Capitalism does follow the money, look at Toyota's recent sales figures. This is a good idea, kind of a reverse boycot. Since we can't do anything about the main cause of global warming, overpopulation, at least we can purchase items with less environmental impact from places that have environmental friendly policies in place.

I hope youre right. Its a brilliant idea and your video shows it working.

  • isaacwayton 3 years ago
This really is a fantastic idea. I know it's still a small movement, and that this was the first attempt at a larger scale operation, but I want to point out a few things in order to help it become more fruitful and environmentally friendly...

    1. Bring your own bags. Don't use the plastic ones at the store.

    2. Buy recycled goods or items with containers that have the potential to be recycled after being used. Plastics with a number "1" or "2" on the bottom is a good guide.

    3. DO NOT BUY ANY BOTTLED WATER. Even though the bottle can be recycled, the amount of money that goes into the production of this item is wasteful and the method is harmful to the environment.

I commend this movement for coming up with a positive way to reward businesses for switching to a more eco-friendly business ethic.

Spread the word and let's make a change!

Global warming is not the greatest threat civilization has ever known; that being said, good video, good idea.

I absolutely love this! Using free market forces for environmental good rather than fighting them.

I would actually like to start a Carrotmob - Chicago chapter on Facebook so we can get in on it too. I thought I'd ask first, though.

The power of the people for sure. How about teaching the airline industry a lesson, or the oil company. A few organized no fly, no drive days.
  •
  • eric 3 years ago
this is abs a youtube-style movie.
  •
  • will drucker 3 years ago
ALEX MILLER, I agree that global warming is not our civilization's greatest threat...humans are. Ironic, huh. Guess who creates global warming...humans. This is a fantastic, non-technological, non-governmental, non-antagonistic (for the most part) solution. Goes to show what a little organization and some conscientious people can accomplish. Get this movie out to colleges! I'm going to spread it around Middlebury College in VT (which is going carbon neutral by 2016, by the way).

There should be one day that would be designated as a Carrotmob Day - where events like this happens on a nationwide scale. That would be something.

And not just the US. The UK, Europe, Asia... it can happen anywhere.

Nice work - I look forward to carrot mob's booming success and the model ideas it will certainly spawn.
Like the video says, it is the power of the people/ dollar that moves government/ corporations; not the other way around.
    What a great idea!!

Corporate greed is huge problem, but instead of trying to change other people's values, whatever you may think of them, this is a great way to get everybody on the same page. Profits don't always have to be destructive.

  • Chris Chan Lee plus 2 years ago
I'm the filmmaker relative that David Lee mentions at about 02:23, which is followed by a clip of my feature film Undoing that is so ridiculously out of context. David is my cousin and that store K&D belongs to my uncle (my dad's brother)!

This concept is a fantastic idea, and the video is friggin hilarious! (although, I think the music video interlude is too long, haha). Can't wait to see what develops with Carrotmob!

I the video you said 22% of what they buy went to environmental improvement but it is actually 22% of the profit on what her sold. Grocery products have extreme small margins (around 1-3%) so sales have to be HUGE to for sizable amount.
  • carrotmob plus 1 year ago
no, it was 22% of the revenue in this campaign. perhaps it has been tied to profit in other campaigns, but not this one. it was around $2000 that they spent on the improvements. agreed that margins are tricky. this store had higher margins than another competing store, which may have helped make it easier for them to bid higher. this maximizes impact, but could be seen as unfair on some level...

  • Maiken Jepsen 1 year ago
I love the idea and the results, it's true that we as the consumer can make an impact one store at a time.

    Excellent job on the video!

Fantastic. would like to start something here in Maui. Any other success stories to share I'd love to know about. Agree that the feature film clip serves no purpose. and too long on the $$ flying around... I'm a filmmaker too.
