You have the power to make a difference in the lives of the youth of Southern California.

Every year, Optimist serves over 1,100 at-risk youth in residence on our main campus in Highland Park and in four satellite group homes as well as community youth referred to our on-site special education school.

The Youth We Serve
The residents of Optimist face challenges that most youth never encounter. The probation systems from several counties throughout California refer their cases to Optimist because of our historical reputation of successfully dealing with the “toughest” cases. Youth come to Optimist with challenges that seem insurmountable. Regardless of the significant hardship they faced, their hopes and dreams do not differ from those of other youth. They want to be happy, obtain their goals, and live successfully. Nevertheless, despite these universal desires, their ability to set goals, catch up in school, and communicate effectively is complicated by an absence of insight into their problems, poor social skills, and difficulty communicating with others.

The teen girls and boys referred to Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services continue to come to us with histories of greater family dysfunction, more severe emotional and mental health problems, and increased measures of substance abuse and behavior problems. Their emotional and educational problems are vast and the level of assessment, treatment, and remedial education they require is immense, challenging all of us to whom their success is important. And yet, every day spent at Optimist is a day of personal accomplishment and triumph over a past filled with disappointment and failure.

Inspired by this vision, we are hosting our Third Annual 5K Walk 4 Youth WALKATHON in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles on Sunday, May 18, 2014. We estimate there will be approximately 150+ community members attending from all over the Greater Los Angeles area. Our Executive Director, Silvio Orlando, will also be in attendance to share information on the mission of our organization.
