This is about the most grip and rip thing I have shot. My visit to Vegas was not planned. I met my wife Linda in New Mexico to drive back to Washington with her and we stopped in Vegas along the way. We spent one night there and were on the road again early the next morning.

With the exception of the first shot, this is all handheld. The post production zoom in the first shot was inspired by a similar technique used by Phil Bloom in his Vegas piece.

Enjoy it.

woo first comment! brilliant work as usual, can you please show me the vivid rgb setting?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
I don't use VIVIDRGB anymore because it's too hot in the Red spectrum so I use a modified version of my original preset...I call this PANALOOK2 (these are settings for the Canon XHA1 only):

    Gamma: Cine2
    Color Matrix: Cine2
    Color Gain: -4
    CPH: 0
    Knee: Low
    Black: Stretch
    Master Ped: -7
    Setup Level: -1
    HDF: Mid
    DHV: 0
    Sharpness: -2
    NR1: Off
    NR2: Off
    Coring: 0
    RGN: 8
    GGN: 11
    BGN: 12
    RGM: 0
    RBM: 0
    GRM: 0
    GBM: 0
    BRM: 0
    BGM: 0

So, do you use the PANALOOK2 for most shots? or what is your primary use for the PANALOOK2 settings?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
At this point it is what I use for nearly everything. I find the color is much more neutral than VIVIDRGB and skin tones look really great. Boosting the color in post instead gives me much more control over the image.

I like your work, it almost makes me want to go back there. I have been there every three years for the last nine years. Last time I was there, my last name was plastered everywhere. Wynn. No relation to billionare Steve Wynn, unfortunately.

Very nice work. The Vegas lights really create a brilliance in the film. Did I miss the hookers?
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
    No, I did...on purpose :)

Hi Steven. Thanks for sharing the Panalook2 profile. You're the best. Do you shoot most of your stuff in 24 or 60? I also have the Canon A1. Hope you got my CD by now.
  • Steven Dempsey 2 years ago
Gene, I did get your CD and really enjoyed it. I'm partial to country music :) I'll get your DVD out in the next day or two...been nuts recently.

With a few exceptions I shoot almost exclusively at 24fps

Nice clip. I will try your Panalook2 settings. The timing of fountain motion and music is verry well done. The benefit of ex- musician is perceptible. Nice job Steve.
Where are you taking your music from? sounds good.

  • How did you achieve the zoom-out in the first/timelapse scene?
  •
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I shot it at 1440x1080 and edited on a 720p timeline giving me a bigger picture to work with. I then digitally zoomed out on the timeline.

    Hi Steven.
Love your work with the XH-A1. I am awaiting delivery of two of these cams. I checked out the EX1, but to get one on the road, ie, card reader, extra batteries and SxS cards will cost me close on £6,000 here in the UK. I played with a XH-A1 for a day, before ordering mine, and realy liked what this camera was delivering. What gain are you using for your Vegas clip, and you early morning/daybreak clips?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I used +6db for a few shots on the Vegas piece. No gain used for the Daybreak film. I don't ever go above +6db unless I'm shooting something unique and have no other choice.

How fast did you get stopped in the casino by the slots? lol. Because when I was there, I didn't make it 10 feet into the casino before 2 security guards stropped me.

Wow, great video, I am blown away by it, I am new to vimeo, and this genre, I hope someday to be as good as you. Can you suggest any resources for such a green beginner as me? read the other comments, don't understand the jargon yet, but I am eager. I have a lot of great vegas story ideas, I want to do a video about the dark side of vegas.

Well anyway, I did a video for my college Honors class based on the book "Jazz" by Toni Morrison, its nothing compared to what you did. I am still amazed...could you take a look at it, and let me know what you think? its called Visions of Jazz 5.1, its on my profile here at Vimeo...Thanks
