Mark studied law before embarking upon a career in business with a telecommunications multinational. After the company relocated to China, he returned to higher education, taking an MA in classics and ancient history focusing on sport in the ancient world. His interest in sport continued in his PhD, which investigated politics and fan identity in Italian football. He now teaches the sociology of sport at the University of Brighton. Mark speaks about the effect on his home town in Devon of the relocation of the telecommunications company, where he, his grandfather and father worked. He used social science to understand the causes and consequences of this change, and to better understand people from a variety of backgrounds.
