Here's the latest installment in my "scenic or historic motorcycle roads" series. This one features Altamont Pass - a mountain pass in the Diablo Range of Northern California between the towns of Livermore and Tracy. The name applies to two distinct but nearby crossings of the range. The lower of the two, carries the route of the original transcontinental railroad and Altamont Pass Road, part of the old Lincoln Highway and the original alignment of US 50 before the freeway came in. The newer route (Interstate 580) travels over the higher summit, at 1,009 ft. S Flynn Rd. also traverses the area, coming up from Livermore and connecting to I-580 at the summit. Nearby is the shuttered up "Altamont Speedway" where the infamous 1969 free rock concert occurred featuring the Rolling Stones.
