2010 The Animation Workshop

My Bachelorfilm from The Animation Workshop. Set to the song "Slow Show" by The National, who were kind enough to allow me to use their music. It is a non-commercial short film, intended for festivals.

It is shot in the forests surrounding Viborg, Denmark. My main inspiration was victorian litterature, and "Boxer" by the national. It was painful to finish, as shooting stop motion in the forest at night for longer periods turned out to offer alot of problems :) But it was also great fun and adventure.

Beautiful and wondrous. I have done stop motion outside as well, albeit on a much lesser scale, so I know how epic and troublesome it can be! All the more reason why yours is so wonderful though, wow!

  • Awesome! I thought the music was wrong until the 3:17 mark and it really came together. Wonderful ending. Great job.

Absolutely beautiful, congratulations. I know how much effort would have gone into this production, I take my hat off to you all. Check out the trailer for my stop motion short, Zero: vimeo.com/5255092
  • Thanks! It's funny, how especially the stop motion people can imagine the dread of the process :)

Oh, and "Zero" looks absolutely beautiful, love the imagery! Hope to see it!

Amazing animation, great ending. While I like track "Slow Show," I feel a full sound design would compliment the piece a lot better. There are huge opportunities in the moments of dread and loss that are diminished by the music. But the visuals are mindblowing!
  • Bettina Frankham 1 year ago
I agree. Beautiful beautiful extraordinary animation that deserves the love and attention of a fantastic sound designer. Difficult though, when you've already slaved so hard to bring the visuals into being. Congratulations on your artistry.

I agree. Great storytelling. The poor bunny's situation pains me. Might I ask how you compressed the video for web display? It looks fantastic, so clear and sharp.
  • Hi Brian, and thanks a bunch!

Well, I had some help :) A couple of tech geeks from the school took care of it. I think they rendered it from the inital AVI uncompressed master, into h264. 720p 25fps, (which is something like what vimeo converts too as well, hence the low dataloss I'd wager) using Cleaner XL. Hope it helps!

I love the characters so much. The warm sense of family history makes for a wonderful lead. The hand in the moon looked odd and confused me as it broke the continuity of style but of course when I saw what it meant I loved it.

The cinematography was amazing coming from a stop motion short film. It is amazing on how much time you put into a short film but how much an accomplishment you have achieved and how much you have given to up and coming artists. "Unleash the creativity!"

I have to add that this was an incredible film from the start, but between the early prettiness and 3:17 it became boring. The beauty of the animation and the process can only hold the animator's attention, not the audience's. Q
