Noise Reduction Crossing
A Northbound Whittier freight crosses Arctic Boulevard. Note that the train horn does not sound but instead a tinny street mounted horn is heard. Note the flashing red X that denotes that the crossing system is working properly. I've heard this refered to as the "X-Box".
Anchorage has several different types of these noise reduction systems. A few have these street mounted horns and others have no horn at all but make it difficult or impossible to cross the tracks with the gates down.
