beautiful work. love the photography and the pacing.

can you tell a little more about how you approached this project? how did michael respond to the work? did you shoot this all on one day? and did you do any kind of prep work with michael before shooting (such as spend time with him without your camera)?

Very nice and touching! I'm a teacher at a danish school where nearly half of the studens have disabilities. Actually I'm a teacher in sea kayaking - also for our disabled students. This movie is a "must see" to our students. Of course I could stream it online to show them but actually we would very much like to buy the film on dvd or the access to download. Is that a possibility?
    Kind regards

    Hi Sean,
I saw this film last week and were really moved, As a kayaker and kayak /canoe instructor, I am often asked why I spend so much time on the water..... this film is a really great answer......
I have linked to this film on my own facebook profile, and on a couple of kayaking forums, all of the responses have been great. I will email you with the links so you can read them for yourself, maybe you could pass the on to Michael..... he really has inspired and touched many people.....
Thanks to you both for allowing us to be inspired
    Mike

PS. one of the forums was in Denmark..... maybe that is were Bertil found the film ?

This short film below touched me deeply, to me the paddler in it shows he has the 5 treasures in life. Beauty, Truth, Adventure, Art and Peace.
I’ll never complain about the class 4 put in again.
I think about what would happen if his access to the water was curtailed and he got a handicapped spot next to the snack bar 200 yards from the water.
Access to water is a birthright, but most of you know that already.
    Paddle fast, live slow.

SEAN, There is a paddling film festival in KY every year. You need to get this film entered, It's a sure winner!
Also consider contacting American Whitewater, and the ACA. I think both organizations would be interested in buying/using you film to further their cause of open access to water.

The waveskier: probably he could be help for other people to put the waveski on the car,or to put his wetsuit more easy...but he now the sense and the soul of to do it like that..all his ritual is important, his surf is complet and is full about bigs and litlle thinks...is a soulsurfer since he leave his house to go to sea...and his words are so autentical...
The filmaker: Your film is the best i never see.I like all,the black and white, the music, the angles of filming, the rhythm, the history...whit few things you catch my heart in yours hands.I am a waveskier, and cried when my wife traslate to my the final speeks ..tanks,men.

Really moving... We have created a charity some months ago here on Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands (where we have Ironman and much surfing), to help people with disabilities especially as motivations are concerned, and starting with motivation through sports and activities. I will - if that's ok - put the link of your video on our website... triwww.com as it Michael is definitely one of those examples for others...
If I have any chance to get in touch with him too, so he could add some words to the video... that would even be more extraordinary... you can contact us at triwww@triwww.com - or here through Vimeo...

Thanks for this beautiful video... as not only the story is moving, the video is also wonderful!

A wonderful pause to the chaos of everyday living.

To be able to capture the shear beauty of an individual defying odds and I believe Kristina's comment above said it best, your friends 'disregard for inconvienient obstacles' is inspiring.

I have a friend who was blinded from wounds sustained while overseas and he has been defying odds much the same. Once a climber, he has already harnessed up and started tackeling the walls simply by touch. This story would be incredibly moving for his family to watch and I will be sure to pass it on.

    Cheers,
we'd be honored to enter the film into the festival.

we are currently working on music rights and it seems we may be a bit long on time. Our film is almost 6mins long.

How firm is the 5min rule?

We will look at a re-cutting to get under 5 mins.

Beautifully and simply done. Michael's daily struggle to reclaim his birthright puts our daily travails into perspective and give poignant meaning to the mantra "to live each day to the fullest."

I'm sure he would say that he's just living his life as he must, but Michael's courage shines.

Also, the paddling film festival in KY that Elliott mentioned is NPFF: National Paddling Film Festival. It was February 26-27, 2010, so you won't make this year but maybe you can enter next year.
