I recently received my twoneil 35mm adapter and was contemplating the first thing I was going to shoot. One thing was for sure, I didn't want it to be a "test." There are already plenty of twoneil tests to view on vimeo.

Those who know me will attest that I am a bit obsessed when it comes to shaving. For the past two years I've been exclusively using products from The Art of Shaving and last year my wife purchased a straight razor and strop for my birthday. It's taken a while to learn the technique and I'm still learning with every cut, but I've been using it ever since.

The idea of shooting a shaving video crossed my mind on more than one occasion, so I thought this was a good a time as any. The footage was shot on my Canon HV30 using a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens and edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. I wanted the video to have a sort of washed out, clean, and sanitized look so I used Magic Bullet for color correction and implemented the "Punchy" preset.

  • Ha haaaaaaa... Tha's great man! Made me nervous watching you use that straight razor. I tried it once, that's all it took! Let's just say; my face didn't look like yours when I was done & I was very pissed off!

Thanks, Jay. Don't worry, my face didn't come out unscathed my first time either (it still doesn't). Your skin needs to adapt to the method. My advice... start with just your sideburns. That's it. Then use your normal shaver for the rest of your face. Each few days try to cover a little more surface area. In a couple months you'll have your entire face down. ;-)

That was pretty cool!! I was thinking what Jay boy was thinking....AAHHH, a straight razor!! What did you edit in?
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
I used a combination of Premiere Pro to edit and Magic Bullet for color correction.

    Very nice.
No tax refund = no HV30. Boo hoo.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Oh man. That sucks. Yeah, my refund definitely made it easier to make the HV30 plunge.

hahah, who knew? that was really good. how much was the lens?
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
You can find the lens for about $100. There are more expensive one's out there for sure, but this one was recommended for this particular adapter.

you have to blow the dust off your ground glass in your dof adapter... unless you meant for it to be there.

nice short. i like the look.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Ummm... yeah... I meant for that dust to be there! That's the ticket!
Actually, a lot of friends have asked me that same question and I wish I could say it was intentional. I definitely need to be more aware of the dust on my ground glass before shooting next time.

Good Job! One more video closer to starting a shaving channel!

I just recieved my twoneil adapter a couple of days ago, but I've been so busy I haven't got time to try it out yet! I can't wait!

That's what I'm sayin', brutha! We gotta unite all the shaving enthusiasts and provide a place we can all call home. :-P

Nice job, Joe.. that razor scared me as well. im on the opposite end of the spectrum and lazy about shaving :)
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Embrase shaving. Love it. You're going to be doing it for the rest of your life so might as well try to make it enjoyable. I associate my shaving time as my "me time." No distractions. It's almost Zen like.

Great idea about the "punchy" effect for color correction/grading...
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Yeah, I just recently saw the remake of Funny Games and dug the stylised stark whiteness of the film. I was going for that same sanitized look.

It's really not that difficult if you have the patience to keep practicing. But boy have I had some nasty "nicks."

i see dust...? but overral nice vid, gives it that filmic look
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Yeah... I totally made a rookie "adapter" move and didn't completely clean my ground glass. Wish I could say it was intentional. But... it wasn't. :-P

cool (when i actually do shave) i swear my my double edged razor, and Geo F Trumper products. one day i think i'd like to make the switched to a single. it makes shaving so much more fun and authentic. you're lucky you can get really close and go against the grain, when i do it my skin just gets pissed off with me, and leaves me with the most annoying razor burn.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
My face definitely had to get "trained" to take on a straight razor. My crossgrain technique is really short strokes. I imagine cutting one hair at a time. Slow and steady wins the race (without any injury).

Cool video, nice shave. You should see this movie called "The American Astronaut," It opens with a great shaving scene :).
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Haven't seen it. I remember when it came out though and heard it was a stinker. Which is too bad because I'm a Depp fan. I'll be sure to check it out though. Thanks!
  • Paul 2 years ago
Ah, no, your thinking of a different astronaut movie, "The Astronauts Wife" I think, which doesn't look much good.
This is a small independent film from a guy named Cory McAbee (no depp though, sorry).
    Here the imdb page:
    imdb.com/title/tt0243759/
    they've got clips on youtube:
    youtube.com/watch?v=wVTmaRXLeZU
I think they have it on netflix if you get netflix.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
Whoa! I was WAY off. Hahaha. Looks like I'm mixing up Astronaut flix. I'll hop over to YouTube and check out the clip. Thanks for setting me straight. That was a close call. Imagine if I rented the crappy Depp movie only to be disappointed with no shaving scene.

this is great! i love the editing, music, color grading, everything. you really know how to put all the different elements together to create your specific style. i also use a variation of the twoneil.
  • Clan McCloud plus 2 years ago
The one and only oliax has blessed me with a comment! ;-) Hey man... thanks a ton for the compliment. I'm a big fan of your videos.

  • I really like it. You know, only my good old dad with his 86 years old, still use his 60 year rasor (at least) like you.
    Congratulations

This short really has a cinematic feel to it Mackles and the post is very clean, hehe. Nice work dude. What exactly does the 35mm adapter do for the film quality? Is this what gives it a more film look to the footage?

Awesome video and a very brave man. I've never had the courage to use a straight razor myself. It's been two years since i had a shave like that from a friendly barber. In my homeland, we call that razor "labaha". :-)

Cool! I am loving the grading and the jump cuts, accompanied by the ramps of brightness and contrast, looks f'ckin cool, as for the music, great choice! Too bad there was some dust on your lens :( looks pretty badass nonetheless. Nice job mate.
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks, Andrew. I had a lot of fun putting this one together. It was the first time I used my 35mm adapter so I was a little neglectful when it came to making sure the ground glass was dust free. Lesson learned. ;-)

That was close to perfect. Really. To shave like that is the mark of a true gentleman, and to shoot like that is the mark of a pro in the making. Great stuff.

But one thing: how many times have you had to stitch your ear back on?
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Hahaha... I've only had to have reconstructive surgery a half dozen times. ;-) Thanks for such a high compliment.

Am soooo sick and tired watching 35mm adapter shots of focusing back and forth... for NO reason at all! Well, your vid was the first one that used the adapter correctly :)

The adapter has a purpose, same as a zoom lens. You have to use it so it makes sense. The Japanese and Chinese are in love with the zoom lens.... zooming in and out endlessly.
I think you saw those movies too.

Same story with the 35mm adapter as people are over-using it.

Thank you for this video and others should take notice how this adapter should be used :)

    cheers
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks, kruzer! What a great compliment. Yeah, I've noticed that a lot of 35mm adapter "tests" focus back and forth. I admit, I have plenty of footage I've taken doing that same exact thing... I just don't post them up because they're tests. I just picked up a Letus. You should check out my video "painting" although you may not like it as much as this one. There is a little bit of "back and forth" in it. ;-)

Really nice video. I loved the close ups, cuts, and color grading. DOF control is a must for depth and artistic footage. This has a lot of elements that are missing in short films...it makes any task interesting if you know how to film it.
  • Clan McCloud plus 1 year ago
Thanks a bunch RNG35! That's exactly what I was trying to do. Make something that we typically don't think twice about and elevate it. If you get a chance, take a look at another one of my videos called unwind. I think you may like it too: vimeo.com/1597615

James, when you said you had used Mozart's 25th on one of your films, I could not have imagined the film would be about shaving.
    but it works! Great job.

Thanks so much for your comment. It was the first time out with a DOF adapter so it was kind of a test video. The dust and lint bothers me. :-P
