I haven't viewed it yet, but what a great idea Brian. I'm downloading it now. I'm sure it will be stunning as always, but better on the plasma tv. Thanks for all of your great work Philip.

Wow Philip -- that was truly fantastic.

I love the clarity of the images; the limited depth of field where you applied it; the wonderful points of view that you chose; the simplicity of the soundtrack; and the absolute elegance of the editing ...

    Bravo!

nice - so what's the rule on this site with using copyrighted music?
  • Joseph Regner 3 months ago
Actually, I'm pretty sure the Nine Inch Nails music he used is from the new Ghosts release which is Creative Commons, so he's legally allowed to use the music as long as he share's it alike and doesn't use it commercially.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
    yeah it's from Ghosts

Did you shoot at noon? The sun is extremely powerful. I was just wondering if the light is more warm and mellow at around five. Like in redrock canyon, where you have much gentler hues in the late afternoon.
Death Valley must be really harsh. Good thing the LEX didn't melt.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
it would have been but I wanted harsh sunshine beating down...heat haze, hot looking people. It wasn't too bad in April, the Summer must be hideous

Can I ask what type of lens you used. I ask because I cannot figure out how you have the extra wide srceen look even though you rendered at 1920X1080.

I have to crop my 1920X1080 video to 1920X780 to get the same look.

But Im only using a sony SR12 consumer camera.
  • Philip Bloom 3 months ago
the version on my website is the proper dimensions without borders. It was cropped to 2:35 to 1 in quicktime using a matte, you lose vertical resolution obviously.

    thanks for your reply.

I forgot to say how much I liked it as well.
    Really nice

Just as I remember it... hot and dry and very beautiful. My family and I got stuck in Death Valley back in 84 when our rental car hubcaps got so hot it melted the tires onto it and gave us 4 flats.

At Some point you are looking for life in the desert and you keep taking us back to these tourists. Like astronauts on Martian soil, great love it

did you ever see Bill Viola's film set to 'Deserts' by Edgard Varese? It's the same landscape, but I had no idea that it is now such a destination for tourists...

Too bad you weren't at Badwater Basin for sunset, the salt turns a blue/purple color. Would've looked amazing.

Absolutely beautiful imagery and well put together. You do an excellent job of creating a sense of environment here.

    Good choice of music too.

Was this for the online competition Trent R. was trying to do with this new album?

Amazing video. I am impressed with the file conversion quality to be able to play here at Vimeo.com.

    I am struggling converting 1920 x 1080i MP2 to Quicktime Version.

    A very nice piece!

    Kindest and sincerest warm regards,

Too bad you shot all of those scenes in broad day light. Zabrinskie Point is best at Sun Rise. .Imagine a time lapsed pan from the vista point.

Devil's Golf Course is amazing at sunset, especially with some cloud formations over Telescope Peak.

Titus Canyon would have been amazing to shoot on HD.

Good job otherwise. Must have been horribly hot and lugging around all that equipment.
