Art History entails more than looking at images in books or on screens, it involves close encounters with physical objects and artefacts. Victoria has an excellent art collection, its own purpose built gallery, The Adam Art Gallery (adamartgallery.org.nz), and close proximity to Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Library, and a host of other art spaces. This allows students to have direct engagement with art works and archival objects and artefacts, and to get a feel for the kinds of experiences generated by such encounters.
