That was great!!! Man, I wish I had one of these cameras, because it seems like you can get some really professional results. How long did it take you to make this?
  •
  • Runner Runner 2 years ago
Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed the film. Michael, I'd say this film took about two weeks to create. One to write the script, and then another week to shoot, edit, score, etc. Definitely a labor of love!
  • iamkalaniprince plus 1 year ago
I definitely loved the labor : ) Superb...

The color grading is most impressive. The story and action scenes had me captured til the end. Great job!

This is epic. Easily the best I've seen so far.
  •
  • Great work. script, acting,.. just one thing: why is the fat man always the lazy, libidinous and dead guy in films?
  • Marty Nowak 1 year ago
cause stereotypes are true! That's why they're stereotypes. And I find stereotypes tend to be true more often than not.
  • Kamel Labiad plus 1 year ago
because one of the reasons of becoming fat is being lazy,
and after becoming fat they become more lazy, and it works like thay lazy->fat->lazy->fat->lazy->fat->boom.
  • animaDj 1 year ago
Yes stereotypes tent to be true, the most ordinary true... specially if we was lazy to think more and sure it becomes more often like this, like common sense tough. Good point here maybe is: should we feed fat stereotypes or try more beside it? Loved the shooting btw, great job!

Congratulations on Top 5! You kicked my ass in the security monitor theme!!!

  • mjgalliott 1 year ago
    Loved it!

Which camera was used the most? A rough indication would be great! Thanks!
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
    Hi Mochenics -

We used the 7D for almost all of the dialogue and the 5D for our wide shots. The 5D's full frame sensor can get you some amazing wide shots!
  • mjgalliott 1 year ago
    Awesome thanks for the info!

I am in market for a DLSR that does both stills and video but can't decide between the FF or 7D APS-C, decisions, descisions.
  • iamkalaniprince plus 1 year ago
Now you can throw the Rebel T2i in the mix as well.. it's APS-C 18 mp as well.. Choices Choices... : )

    On the film :
All I have to say is two things.
    1. Excellent execution on all fronts !, Well done !

    and

    2. Why is gas $4.00 on Maui where I live and $2.65 wherever you are !!!, please tell me that what the set decorator going for a period piece : )

Yes I agree this is a story, the rest is a bunch of running. It will be you or the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time. Well at least one of you will get my vote.
  •
  • Matt 1 year ago
OK I did it, i was a hard choice but I feel that you are telling a story.
  •
  • Transcendent Films plus 1 year ago
It was a very, very hard choice to make. I must have watched each finalist entry 6 or 7 times each. But now I've done it, I feel I've made the right choice.

This definitely had to be a labour of love. All the little nuances... The cabbie doppleganger - genius. Even down to the clerk's tannoy voice, 'have to prepay after 10...' just awesome. (and love the way he looked the mystery guy up and down). Well done.

Congrats, you got my vote... it is the best story of all 5 in my humble opinion.
  •
  • I agree with transcendent films this had everything. was laughing hard at "I read. Boo-B's" haha great work. good show!!

  •
  • Robin Schmidt plus 1 year ago
Well done guys, I don't think you need me to tell you what a good job you've done. As I think people are now starting to realise, the camera does a really nice job but a film is still a film, and storytelling still requires subtlety and feel, both of which you've delivered on where some of the others failed. Definitely a worthy top 5.

GENIAL !!! This is it, is the only one that really makes sense. GREAT WORK !!!

Q: How and in what did you recorded audio (dialog)
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
    Thanks, Jaime!

In terms of the audio, we recorded everything to a separate digital audio recorder and slated everything to ease the syncing in post.

More importantly, I was lucky enough to work with two really talented audio guys here in Minneapolis. Patrick Schaefer did production sound, and Daron Walker did the post mix. It's all about working with good peeps, and these two guys fit the bill!

what mics did u use for the audio recording?
  • Patrick Schaefer 1 year ago
Thanks! We used a Sennheiser MKH416 for the boom and a couple of Lectrosonics 400 series wireless systems paired with a Countryman B6 lav and a Lectrosonics lav, I believe it was an M152. Everything went through a Sound Devices 442 mixer into a Sound Devices 702t recorder.

I voted for yours, because it was funny, and was taking a specific path. Also your transition was very smooth and the ending shot is easy to tamper with. You set little boundaries, but definitely told a story. GOOD WORK!

  • Brad Mirman plus 1 year ago
The best of them all. What frame rate did you shoot at?
  •
  • Alex Lewis 1 year ago
Loved it! Some good humor, the shot of the dead security guard was realistic, better than the stuff you see in the movies.

Vote from me! I always love humor
  •
  • Martin Koch 1 year ago
    You've got my vote.
What I didn't like was the transition from the still to your colored version which I think looks too much different and artificial and doesn't fit to the professionality of the rest. I would have prefered to see that still changing into the green of the surveillance monitor immediately.
Other than that I enjoyed your version very much. Good, humorous acting and a story without endless running scenes or looong scenes just to fill 4 minutes ;-).

I'll say this, I'm glad this is the bar. I enjoyed one or two of the other finalists, but this was well orchestrated on every level.

I think the big thing people are missing here is your first comment. Sure it took two weeks to do this project, but HALF OF THAT was writing it. And it shows. Kudos.

    fantastic work !

main thing .. great story .. humour ... and great look `!
i hope you dont mind answering a quick question ..

what lenses did you use and what lens did you use at 1:20 and2:56

thanks and congrats on your win !!!
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
    Hi Anthony -

Thanks for watching. We shot both of those scenes on the 5D with a 16-35mm f2.8 lens. The camera was up on a 12-step ladder for that wide shot of the guard walking across the warehouse lot. For the truck shot, we rigged the camera to the side of the truck (photos coming soon!)
  • Anthony Johnson 1 year ago
    thanks for the info ...

its hard for me to decide which wideangle to get .. maybe i should go for the canon 16-35 ....

i have been looking at just getting like a 24mm zeiss prime ...

    :-)

  • Justin Leyba 1 year ago
    Nice job guys!
One question, was this in 24p?
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
    Hi Justin -

90% of the film was shot on the 7D, which was all shot at 24p. We used the 5D here and there, which only shoots 30p. The plan was to do a frame rate conversion on the 30p footage, but we ran out of time. If you look closely, you can see the 5D shots stutter just a bit. Let's hope for that 5D 24p firmware upgrade soon!

What suspense! Well done........I want one of those cameras. My Canon 1000D seems so inadequate now that I have seen what a better camera can do with a little imagination.

Production value was excellent. I would have preferred keeping the storyline a little less adult oriented (no nudey mag and...). But still a great job.
  •
  • Athena 1 year ago
wow, nice, super nice, I liked the adult content, just the right amount. I'm so proud of you. I was on the edge or my seat and wanting more! Great actors too, great actors! I'm going to watch it 10 more times.........
  •
  • Athena 1 year ago
oh, great judging too. I love when winners win.
  •
  • James Reed plus 1 year ago
What lenses did you use? How did you plan your shots? By the way great JOB. I'm shooting a feature length comedy of my 5d ii in a couple of months and your short really did encourage me to moving forward.
  •
  • James Reed plus 1 year ago
Also if you don't mind me asking, what lights did you use? I know the 5d ii is good in low light but what kind of lighting package would you recommend?
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
4' 4-Bank Kino Flo's are where it's at, James. We don't have any lights yet either, but when the time comes it'll be 4' 4-Bank Kino's first thing!
  •
  • James Reed plus 1 year ago
But what lights did you use to shoot this?
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
Sorry to confuse you. We don't own any lights, but on "Job Security" we got really lucky in that our DP was booked on a daytime gig all week. For that gig, he rented some lights, as well as the 7D. Since we shot at night only, we had access to all of his rented gear for free!

That's the way to shoot for no money...
  • Runner Runner 1 year ago
So yeah, we used Kino Flo's for both the security office and in the taxi cab. For the exterior lot of the warehouse we used a 2k (and 2 650W's for the rooftop shot of the truck). For the gas station, we just rocked that as-is pretty much!
  • Rick Macomber plus 1 year ago
I like the way you think!
  •
  • James Reed plus 1 year ago
Thank man, I really appreciate it. Looks like I'm going to have to add the Kino Flo's to my lighting kit. I also wanted to say that you did a good job telling the story. Most people think that anything they shoot with the 5D ii is a short but if it's void of story, what's the point. Keep up the good work.

See you on the way up!
  •
  • Thomas Snide 1 year ago
Excellent job on the video, filming and drama.

My only complaint is that I had my kids excited about this competition. They were even dreaming up how they'd write the next chapter. But, not exactly a video I want to make sure they watch.

So... nice idea Canon... but too bad you just cut out the families following this project.
  • Aaron Richey 1 year ago
With all due respect to the families out there; I don't think that was the aim of this particular contest. This was designed to challenge filmmakers and photographers to utilize a new format and flex their skills, skills which are learned through experience and hard work. On that note, I would love to see a different contest, for kids, to create the best "family friendly" story.
