Monks and nuns have traditionally played a key role in preserving and spreading the Buddha's teaching as well as educating and guiding lay practitioners. Since the time of Shakyamuni Buddha the sangha have been dependent on the lay community for basic necessities, and in return sangha members helped guide lay followers in the path of dharma.
