The famous Smoothcam effect, a plug-in available with Final Cut Pro 6. Two examples (thanks to family !) and for each, three footages : :
1) Without any smoothcam,
2) With smoothcam in automatic,
3) With smoothcam in manual.

Nice, looks much better than Mercalli at first sight. Mercalli cuts the frame. I wish something similar would be available on PC...

This cuts the frame too. Compare the space over the the girl's head when she turns in the original and stabilized portions. It has to cut some of the frame, that's how image stabilization works - it keeps readjusting the frame positioning to keep the elements in the same place. So you have to zoom in to some point that hides the maximum adjustment made. You can do the same thing without the border intrusion visible here using Virtualdub (free) and a de-shaker filter. Not sure if Vdub does HiDef vid.

The review I believe compares static content and that's where Mercalli works well. But I didn't have much success with a video like this (walking) smooth with Mercalli.
