So that /you too/ can make smoke at home. lol

Great tutorial, I spent a long time figuring most of this out myself a while ago. I'm hoping that making smoke renderable becomes a bit more logical too. :P

And a tutorial on camera mapping would be pretty cool, do that.
  • Andrew Price plus 1 year ago
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it :)

And yes, the rendering debacle is unbelievable! The number of steps required to get it rendering correctly is astounding. It should be automatic as soon as you select 'Domain'.

    Ah well... I'm not a coder so I can't really complain ;)

I have some issues with this videos. Firstly, the intro is too cheesy. Secondly, it is extremely unneccesary and distracting to have your face in the bottom right the whole time. Thirdly, it is way overlong; most people are short on time and want to get information quicker...I quit after 13 mins. Lastly and most importantly, it was almost useless to me because instead of showing us an example in the interface, you showed us panels cut up individually, and for a begginer/intermediate user it is much better to show where each panel is in relation to each other. The format for video tutorials (i.e. voice over video of you putting an example together) has worked for years, best keep to it.

Can't agree. The demonstration was fine, video length acceptable and smoke simulation explained quite comprehensively. It may not be the regular kind of tutorial you're used to but seeing a more relaxed "making of" video in a long time was very refreshing. Even new features in latest builds were mentioned, which is exactly what I needed to know. Great tut..

Thanks for the support Tobey :)

And thanks for your critiques Andreas. I'll take some of them on board.

You quit at 13 min, Adreas? The tutorial part of the video started at 14:46... so maybe you should load it back up at that point and watch the rest!

And I agree its a bit long, but I enjoyed watching all of it, and learned quite a bit. Thanks for the video, Andrew.

You've got some scaling problems. It's not really believable to see smoke that looks like it's coming from a candle to be coming from a building on fire. It should be thicker. In fact, you shouldn't even need the smoke simulator because smoke on that scale wouldn't benefit much from it anyways. For large plumes of smoke, you should use a particle system and a volumetric material.
  • Andrew Price plus 1 year ago
Yeah the scaling problem is definately something I'm aware of. But it was the best I could do with the computer I've got. To make it more realistic I'd need to up the resolution, which my computer simply couldn't handle :(

And can you even apply a volumetric material to particles?
  • Trevor Harris 1 year ago
You can if you set the display type to sphere.

Great tutorial. I'm looking forward to more of your tutorials. Your format did not distract me from the information you were giving.

hey how did you get the debris in your video? like the floating scraps of paper. im not sure if there is already a tutorial because im new, but im curious how to do it
  • Andrew Price plus 1 year ago
Particles! In the particle settings change the visualization to 'Object' then type the name of the object you want to appear (in my case a single sheet of paper). Blender will then render every particle as a sheet of paper. Play with the settings to get the right motion you want :)
  • Kristian Zuniga 1 year ago
ha that seems so obvious now, thank you

Are there any 32-bit version of the 2.5 you use?
  • Andrew Price plus 1 year ago
Of course! Most compilers provide both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Scroll down and you'll see multiple builds for 32-bit.

graphicall.org for blender builds. I use it all the time :)

Didnt get to the tutorial itself yet. Just to say i love the video in the begining. I like the "epicness". I think the music gives it a lot as well. Well done.

This was an excellent video showing the new smoke features of 2.5. Although, 'Space' no longer brings up the Add options (I had a little trouble w/ that). Looking forward to BlenderCookie's upcoming 2.5 overview series (much as changed - for the better in 2.5). Nice work Andrew. Let us know when your fire tutorial is ready!

Excellent tutorial. You did a great job explaining 'why' you set things the way you do, not just set this to x and this to y...
The web cam was good--especially when you are giving an overview and there's not much to watch otherwise.

    awesome!

the only limit of the smoke is that is actually impossible to use 2 times the same bake :(

Really great tut man! Very well explained as usual and I really appreciate the web cam idea, it brings life to the tut isntead of just seeing the cursor moving and hearing a voice! Great job and THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP :)

GREAT intro :) The smoke (and the whole visual - such as where the smoke is coming out of the Empire State building,) could have been better, but as a whole it held together brilliantly, especially with the "We all fall down" music and titling. Stunning. :) Now onto watching the tutorial... hum-dee-dum... (Note: switching from such an epic intro to a webcam video... eeeh... nope. Bad move. Very anti-climatic.)

Just noticed: The distant smoke is moving too fast

Very good, man. Awesome stuff. Stop making such excellent content! :D Yes, I'd love to find out how you did the camera projection, and the falling papers, and the lighting, and the uv mapping, and the texturing... SHEESH :) I want to know it ALL :)

I love the mix of media: awesome intro, seeing you talk, seminar feel, and screen capture. I've had a somewhat similar idea but as I'm just starting out in doing video tutorials I haven't gotten the swing of things yet (and even if I had, I am not as experienced in Blender as you are, sorry to say.) Anyhow, great work.

    Until next time!

Great tut, very interesting. Nicely sectioned up, kept it interesting. You've got to be at least in the top 3 tut givers on Blender. I disagree with those that say it is too complex. If you just watch tuts on stuff you already know you will never get better. I agree that smoke is way too complex for what it does. The volume and voxel data settings should be something done in the background. But I'm glad to see it moving along, my first smoke creations were crashing my mac every time. Now, not, just long render times. Thanks for sharing all you know on this subject. Much more respect for someone who does that than keep it to themselves.
