Sometimes life takes an unexpected turn. A normal morning at work becomes an episode that will change the course of your life.
For some, that unexpected turn means joining the ranks of around 20000 Queenslanders whose lot is reduced to life in poverty; their home four walls of a caravan. Their great Australian dream lost. They are the fringe dwellers, mostly single men or ageing couples with incomes on the poverty line.
Typical of many, eighteen months ago Kiwi John was a truck driver not quite ready for retirement. Then, a road accident early one morning while driving his truck, resulted in an almost 25km road chase and sent him on the way to life in a caravan.
However, Kiwi John took on life on the fringe with stoic pragmatism. Here is his story, his postcard from the fringe.
