Round 6 is a short 3D animated film created by Snowball Studios.
Our goal was to make a high quality video game cinematic styled trailer. In order to do this, we invented a video game called Fragball on which we based the action. The film shows an excerpt from the personal story of Snap, a Fragball gamer, as he plays out his last round - round 6.

An alternative sound & music version by Javiel Gonzalez cab be found here: vimeo.com/23257228

Shorts like this make me wish there was a "LoOOVE" tag on these social networks... I love the awesomeness of this short.
I'm pretty sure there are going to be hundreds of comments to this movie here shortly, so I'm proud to say that I've followed it's progress from the start, and I'm thrilled to see how far you've come along from the first draft. Those few shots that you've added are pure poetry, and I'm glad you decided to waited and go for perfection, because you've achieved it.

Don't forget to say hi when you come to Hollywood... :-)

    Thank you!
Ruben - thank you for helping, your credit is well justified!
Gidli - We wanted to add all the details we talked about, but by that stage of the production we had the Vipo 2 trailer in crazy deadlines and didn't have time to add a lot of little nuances we planned on...

Absolutely gorgeous. The movement is really interesting - really cool and difficult to describe! Definitely fits the piece though. I can't say enough about how beautiful it was, awesome work!!

Big fan of the materials, lighting, and rendering, though the sound is pretty trashy, really amateur compared the rest of this brilliant piece. Some decent sound fx could really push the mood. Brilliant.
  • Snowball Studios 1 year ago
Well, the sound was a bit of a problem. We ended up needing to do the sound (and music) in about 2 weeks, with no budget. But I agree and think that finer SFX would be nice.

amazing work, but that's true about the sound...

This was WONDERFUL! I just read the spot in 3D world and was really excited to see the piece! Great work! Have you ever played Unreal Tournament 2003 with the "football" type game? That is what this reminded me of, only way more cinematic and cool. I agree about the sound, but it still doesn't take too much away. I was curious about what you used for the "dust" blowing. Did you use a fluid system and composite in post? What software? Does Max have fluid support? I haven't used max in a while. I also really love the muscle control you had going with Snap. Rigging must have been interesting! GREAT WORK ALL AROUND!
  • Snowball Studios 1 year ago
    Thanks.
    I haven't played UT2003 much, I must admit.
The dust was done with FumeFX simulations. We made a large simulation we reused for most of the shots, and made specific simulations where we needed them.

does this require editing? or just animation? like editings, i mean after effects stuff?
  • Thing.nl 11 months ago
Just look at the blog, they explain how this was done. You can see they used Fusion for the compositing.

Really awesome work, texturing and (camera-)animation are top notch.
  • Snowball Studios 11 months ago
    Thanks Thing.
Yea, Nolan. Animation and a lot of editing as well. It's best in many cases to keep some of the work for later touches, that way you can work more streamlined and worry less about everything at once.

Forget the EA game, NBC should be using this for Sunday Night Football instead of that stupid (IMO) 'Hey Now' intro they use (youtube.com/watch?v=xwhctLQKd7U). This is truly great stuff! I'm constantly amazed by the quality of some CG work, and this is a great example. Thanks for the treat!

Everything is manually animated, no live action at all. Glad you liked it.
Trailer is interesting. It's well done and edited. Not quite sure I got the storyline, but it's a trailer, so maybe it's best that I didn't.
