This is 1min teaser to my upcoming short film , Frame 137.

The film is a sci-fi action piece based on the work of James O'Barr creator of the Crow, and made with his permission.

The film was shot on the RED using Lomo Anamorphic Lens over a weekend. Sam ransom the ten year old boy who plays Jonny Z, the films hero, notably performed all his own stunts including the fire breathing and wire-work, some of which is showcased in the Teaser.

The music used in the teaser, was also very generously recorded for the film by Nick Oliveri and Dave Grohl my sincerest thanks guys.

You can also see a cool behind the scenes film showing how we made the set for the short film on our minimal budget here vimeo.com/8255232

You can follow the release of the short film and the development of the feature on facebook.com/frame137film
or on my Twitter

This looks very nice, but I don't like the ultra-ultra-widescreen at all. It actually gets in the way of my viewing habits and doesn't let me enjoy the film, because I have to constantly move my eyes left and right, instead of filling my frame of vision with a taller picture and let me focus on it. With the ultra widescreen you're using, I just can't focus on it, my brain feels like it's missing something, and constantly moves my eyes left and right. Please consider re-framing the film before release.
  • Ayz Waraich plus 1 year ago
Eugenia, Judd's planning to release the final film in 2.35:1 scope ratio. don't worry.

    Thanks btw!

Impressive production value, bravo! You really do have a great eye for action and what makes something cool. Excited for the full product.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Thanks Bryce, really appreciate that I've never really put my work out to the internet before so its great to hear people enjoying it.

Wow, cool. I like the framing very much, but as Eugenia said it's not good for a final release. As a Teaser / Trailer it really looks bad ass :-)
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Hey glad you enjoyed the teaser, as Ayyaz noted the film was shot for 2.35 so when we do put the short film out expect to see it a more traditional cinemascope.

Looking good! The more cyberpunk the better
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
I really hope it builds enough interest that we do start to see some GOOD Cyberpunk films released its a criminally under appreciated sub-genre with so much potential.

    Truly awesome short. Great work.
I just watched the behind the scenes footage with your breakdown. Is the $1600 just for the set or, or were you seriously able to make this with a cast an crew of 93 people without paying them anything, much less the film equipment?
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
    Thanks Ashley.
Yeah $1600 was just for production design.

Everyone did work for free, for which I am still extremely grateful, but we did have to hire lens, camera, lights, etc, we had hand made costumes for the 40 cast and extras, quite a few make up FX so it all adds up.

Fortunately even with those costs though people were very good to us, the studio space was a centre were they run programs to help disadvantaged kids and we were able to involve them so we ended up using the place for several months for only a few hundred dollars, like wise the fire gags, rigging stunt work in the short would have costs tens of thousands of dollars that I certainly didnt have. But fortunately I knew some very experienced Stunt people mostly from Sleeper (a previous low budget feature I'd produced the year before and so we managed to do a huge amount just paying for the hard costs.

Thanks Judd. I loved the the behind the scenes footage which helps tremendously as I'm gearing up to make my own short film.

  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
The Extreme scope was strictly for the Teaser. But Thanks for the kind words.
  •
  • Looks really great actually. I'd love to hear more about how it was shot in just a weekend.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Thanks for the kind words, the short is coming together really well looking forward to getting it out there.

By far the hardest part of production was shooting all the action (about 14 pages worth) in the space of two days). To pull it off we had Sam (the 10 year old who plays Jonny) rehearsing the routine with the fight choreographers and various stunt people for the previous 6 weeks, with only a few changes as we went and on the day due to location and shooting practicality's.

Our third day was set aside for the actual drama scenes, our introduction of Jonny, Mac, Jax and the Grey, meeting Big T, and the final confrontation as Jonny prepares to do what he was paid to do.

Also we moved quite quickly but kept the fluid subjective style I was looking for throughout, by shooting about 80% of the short film on steadicam (Thankyou Milan) with only the final confrontation switching to a more locked off style.

The website will have more info on how things were done, and theres also a full Behind the scenes on the film with interviews from department heads etc. that I'm planning to release around the time of the launch.

But like wise feel free to buzz me any questions on frame137@hotmail.com.

Really awesome and impressing work. But where can i find the behind the scenes footage you're talking about?
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
    Thanks Florian.
The production designers behind the scenes on how he built the set can be found here vimeo.com/8255232 and on the films facebook page.
The behind the scenes for the film has not been released yet. I'll be putting that up on here along with the films facebook page. It will be be online prier to the films release.
  • Florian Bredl 1 year ago
Thank you very much. I'm curious about the final release, the whole project is really inspiring. It's always motivating to see what's possible even without the big cash.

That was simply bad ass. There is tons of mood and atmosphere crammed into one minute... can't wait to see the short. Love the fire. Great work!
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Thanks atmosphere is really what I was going for with the short.
For me that's the thing with great sci-fi and particularly cyberpunk its just crammed with so many layers, its why in Bladerunner the world has depth even if you only get a chance to glimpse a fraction of it in one scene its intriguing, you know there's more and you want to see it.

Superb job, and a great representation of a fascinating sub-genre. Excited to see the full short one day, and I'll be at the talk tonight.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Hey Jay great seeing you last night, it really is a great genre, hopefully Frame is just the tip of the iceberg of what will get made in the next few years..
  •
  • robbie myers 1 year ago
wow.....this is amazing......im a big fan of the red camera myself....just wish i could afford one
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Thanks Robbie a big part of it is the Anamorphic Lomo lenses as well, they have such beautiful flares and depth of field on the RED it adds a real solid cinematic style, particularly when you see it in the more familiar 2.35 ratio, but overall the age and quality of the Lomo's just gives a more ntural "real" look.

    Hey Judd,

It goes without saying man, GREAT looking trailer! I am dying to see the rest of the film. When will it be released? Where will it be released? I do have a few production questions for you but I'll email them directly if that's Ok?

Once again great job and looking forward to seeing it soon.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
    Thanks Ron,
Im hoping to have a new trailer which is more narrative based up in the next few days, the final short, I've pushed back until everything is polished but should be sometime in April I think.

Shoot me over any production questions though all the best, talk soon, cheers.

looks awesome good luck. always wanted to make a cyberpunk movie... will try to get things going :)
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Let me know how you go getting something up I love Cyberpunk and its so seldom done well, Im more then happy to help out if I can if it means more good content being made.
    Cheers.
  • Nikolai Pigarev plus 1 year ago
yeah i know. i was part of a project in Australia :) siliconspies.com/ good idea not so well executed :) but now i am in russia and it is just calling for a cyberpunk movie
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
ahh Silicon Spies, I met Dean years ago, a good guy, with great intentions, even the idea wasnt half bad, but the execution really was "tacky TV" and they couldnt really lock in if they were a Dirty Dystopian future or a Clean Utopian one.
Russia though has had some great films recently the Nightwatch, Daywatch etc series has been a big inspiration just in terms of their tone and visual style, was great to see him successfully branch into the US. along with Germany, Russia is one of two countries the original Frame world really draws on for a lot of its aesthetic, to the point where if Detroit doesnt prove viable to make the feature I will seriously be looking into Russia I suspect.
  • Nikolai Pigarev plus 1 year ago
Sweet@ I knew the world is fairly tiny. Am good friends with Dean. Well at least when i saw him last like 6 years ago. Russia is certainly cool for aesthetics and old soviet junk :) keep in touch... :) i am planning on a first russian zombie movie this summer
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Cool I have a friend who did an Irish Zombie movie, if you get the right spin, it can be a fascinating concept, if you havent seen it check out the short australian zombie film "I love Sarah jane", its very Australian both in humour and in characterization and it really uses the zombie backdrop beautifully. course you can always go the all out insanity approach as wel which is why Zombie vfilms are SO versatile.
  •
  • Great look Judd! Am keen to watch the full movie :)

  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
Thanks Yann, just wrapped on a feature Ive been producing and I'm officially back onto finishing the short so hope to have it finished up... shortly
  •
  • Damn that was cool as hell! I'm very excited to see the entire film and the feature! I was very impressed by how much you did for so little. We shot a teaser scene for our own film for less than $300 but it's nowhere nearly as cool as yours! Congrats and Good luck!
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
cheers guys, you should check out the Hatter M comic series very dark moody stuff reminds me of Ben Templesmith art wise, with a cool surreal victorian vibe, you'd probably dig it. Plus Chuck Roven is attached to produce a fetaure version of the Looking glass wars which the Hatter M series is a spin off from.

Anyway thanks for the support and hope you guys keep at it, cheers.

That was definitely awesome. Props just for getting James O'Barr's permission, but beyond that, good work.

THanks man, Working with James since has been a real pleasure too.
  • adev.ious.plot 1 year ago
Working with him since? Damn, you are lucky. I'm just doing the whole indie thing without help, well, a little help from an actress and a band but not much else. Good luck with everything, if you're ever in Florida (and soon LA) and you need help, let me know.

dude, i just wanna say this is one of the dopest cyberpunk trailers on vimeo. this genre comes in many flavors and you've definitely nailed the look and feel of this story. i have to admit my favorite part is just seeing the beginning title card, "a cyberpunk vision." it's just an underestimated genre that has so much literary potential. and the fact that this is a James O'Barr tale. f@ck yeah!

i have my own cyberpunk short in the works with literature based on norbert weiner and cybernetics and religion. but the bar has definitely been set with this trailer. ;) look forward to the final cut.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 1 year ago
    Appreciate at it Richard.
After nearly 12 months of having the trailer up Im glad to see the film should be ready by New Years (which is like the 3rd time at least Ive set a deadline so i guess even Im dubious of myself now)

But yeah its been a great process since the trailer went out, from working with O'Barr on the feature to refining the short and a bunch of other stuff like producing a feature film in between, but yeah its an adventure and its great to have something you can be passionate about to come back to at the end of the week.

By the way love your city timelapse, the first shot reminded me of a circuit board breathing, was beautiful.
  • Richard Gluck plus 1 year ago
that's awesome. i'm glad i've just come to learn about this project sooner rather than later, otherwise the wait would of killed me.

thanks a lot man. that was definitely the idea. i'll be incorporating some time lapse as well as some motion control photography in my short cp story. don't be surprised if you get a link with a password one day with some up to date progress. i would love to here your thoughts regarding.

Can you tell why is there this ultra wide picture, lomo lenses do not create 2.35 or 2.40 frame but even wider? It's to wide.
  • Judd L. Tilyard 2 months ago
The anamorphic properties of the lomos double the width of the 16x9, 4K recorded image. RED cameras prior to having the "anamorphic" setting could only record in 16x9, now they have a mode that automatically crops and stretches the image so you can see a true 2.35 anamorphic image when you use anamorphic lenses.
