Samurai
This was an internal development piece that we produced at RealtimeUK. (realtimeuk.com)
The team was approx 4/5 people, working over a couple of months.
Made in 3dsmax, rendered in vray, post in AfterFX.
It's a bit flickery in places, but we were on a tight deadline before we had to get back to paid work. Only just managed to fit it in.
Might see about re-rendering a few bits.
The body is Mo-Cap, the Face is hand animated morph targets.
The Mo-Cap was recorded at Audiomotion (audiomotion.com)
The Mo-Cap data is taken from one continuous stream. The whole piece plays end to end, so we could concentrate on the cinematography.
Characters were modelled in zbrush.
Ta!

I posted it on motiongraphics.nu. Hope you're fine with that.
one hello from me, Adnam
My question: motion capture?
The body is Mo-Cap, the Face is hand animated morph targets.
Keep on rocking! all the best
Cheers Silverwing
Simply beautiful.
modeling was amazing, animation was so fluid.
Great job!!
really cool work
This is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
very like the rendering...
i would also really like to know if the animation is handkeyed or mocap. (seems like mocap to me)
Du très bon ; -)
I 'd like to see the technical side of the job (model, rigs, compositing...).
Thanks for all the comments guys. I'd love to reply to everyone but the same questions seem to keep popping up, i'll edit the description above to answer some of them.
Thanks again!
My only critique is the face of the samurai - the one without the mask - not so realistic on expressions sometimes. But of course I understand these all done in a VERY short time.
I know some "superstars" who cry and run during a project with a tight deadline like this.
(vimeo.com/9996009) You might like this.
I do have one critique, however, and my apologies if this comes off as a little too nit-picky. It's the one thing that felt like it deserved a bit more attention to solidify the ending. For me, the one thing that stands out is that the black samurai seems a little "tense" as he's walking off, still grasping his sword and scabbard with both hands. After slaying the red samurai, he sheathes his sword in victory, but I can't tell if he's (deliberately) unsure of his victory, or if it was just an animation oversight, that he would deliberately strut off still grasping his sword with both hands.
If his shoulders relaxed a bit as he's walking away, maybe even loosening his grip on his sword, I think it would further solidify the piece, and the short story that's been told. Just my $0.02.
Again, great job on this piece. This was the only part that felt glaring to me. (the facial anim, having been hand animated, didn't feel nearly as noticeable as his body language at the end)
Great Job, and look forward to more. Hopefully it turns out to be a paid gig next time.

Thats it, oh and ZBrush for modells, but basicaly THAT was done with only these.
Just blew my mind about the posibilites using only these tools.
Amazing job in my opinon.
You just inspired me to get into 3D, as I have been hesitant for a (too)long time but this brakes it to pieces.
Truly inspirational.
